Anti M's Home for Wayward Art 2014

Good morrow, good peoples! And fuckos.

The Home is slated to return as the fates allow. Look for us on the perimeter of Hushville once more.

Standard introduction:
Established in 2005, Anti M's Home for Wayward Art is a place for small art, medium art, amateur art, but especially Bad Art, Lost Art, Found Art, Art which Needs a Good Spanking, and of course, Wayward Art. This is not a gallery, it is more like juvenile detention for art, an orphanage, a half-way house for misfit art. All art in the Home is up for adoption, all the prospective new parent needs to do is fill out a small adoption form and clip it to the Home in place of their newfound art darling. Art may also be committed to the Home, just put it securely in place and say good-bye. While the emphasis is on visual art such as paintings, drawings and photos, other mediums such as sculptural art, jewelry, and trinkets found their way into the Home to be scooped up and loved. Costumes, MOOP, food, and your abandoned sign too bulky to haul around are not within the parameters, thank you. If you are donating many items, do leave them in the back, in the shade structure with a note.

Why? I love to paint, I love to do miniatures, I love to give things away. Based on the concepts of art and gifting, I came up with the Home. Why Bad Art? While I am quite good at miniatures, I am not always pleased with my products. I also glean art from thrift stores and friends and family and yard sales. Some of the most fabulous donated pieces have been dumpster diving finds.
This project would not be the resounding success it is each year without the generous art donations and creativity of eplayans and random burners. Even my Muggle friends give me art now.

For the new:
Drawings and sketches are most welcome, but do try to have them mounted at least on sturdy cardboard. The wind does a number on paper. Same thing with poetry, try to mount it. Handmade books are in high demand. Charcoal drawings? Blackboard? Nope, the playa dust obliterates them.

Framed art with glass... tricky. Smaller pieces do better than larger ones, and do not transport frames with glass flat, stand them on edge. I've got a few nice prints whose glass is smashed, I have to repurpose them now. That said, don't pass a thrift shop treasure up just because it has glass. Use your judgment.

Small three dimensional items are okay, but I prefer not to have an over-abundance of them. Too difficult to display as my table is small. This is some thing I need to work on. Perhaps some shelving? Oddly, fridge magnets go over well, I can stick them to the trailer. Pottery is welcome, cups and bowls are most popular.

I now have a Gifting Box off to the side, so that is likely where smallish items such as jewelry will end up. I've turned down some pieces such as purses made of duct tape for the Home, because they simply don't fit in with what I'm doing art-wise. Doesn't mean it isn't art and is not a marvelous gift, just means it isn't "my thang". The Box is a good place for those type of things. Swag pendants and patches and stickers fall in between, either the Box or the Home is appropriate.

I do "curate" the Home daily, choosing pieces with similar themes or colors or resonance. Don't be surprised or discouraged if I don't put up something you bring to me right away. Some years things even come home then go back. Sometimes I keep art for a year or two. If a piece never moves, it is fair game for repurposing.

Godzillas have a special place in my heart. Stomping on it some days.

Any questions?

Aunti M. Thanks for being there when I needed an art piece for my camp. Yeah for the coming year! I've got a couple of pieces done already. (Bad art from someone's beginner art class). I made them better or worse depending on your taste. I'm also working on some stuff made from CDs. They can be cut if boiled or shaped if baked. Fun times.

I would just like to give a big huggla huggla thank you to Fishy for donating the wooden duck sculpture. I adopted it this year, the first time I've adopted art from the Home. It is prominently displayed on my piano.

Is it the one painted all over in different colors? Does it say anything on the bottom?

It is... I have the squeaky duck in my hall, going to bling it out. The wooden duck is magnificent.

(I think I remember that duck... Not sure.)

I am often (once a decade or so) asked what is it that makes me such a spectacular donar...
Hm...
The thrill of the hunt, always being willing ot go into that thrift store, or free box to see if anything good is on offer.
An "eye". Even though a lot of the stuff is something I'd never own, I can see the artistic value (or in many cases, lack thereof) in a lot of the random stuff out there.
Being a collector. Or pretending to be. Some stuff does make it into my permanent collection. And a fair amount is stuff I might keep if I had room.
A sense of the absurd.
A spending plan. My spending plan is to buy nothing for more than $1--unless it's really good. Your spending plan could be "I can afford $20 this year". That means that you have a cut off. It might also mean that you spend your twenty wisely. Either way, you're free to make aesthetic judgments, and not worry about money. Or you could tie your acquisitions to the amount of room you think you'll have to haul them to the playa.

I also have genres I am particularly drawn to. Feminist power collage--or painting. They are often embarrassingly cheesy in sentiment and flawed in execution. Gives me a focus.

But wait, there was also a decoy duck? A small plain duck?

Duck it.

I would just love to think that Robbidobs is sitting at home looking at that stupid duck that I painted. So I'll think that. (Sticks out tongue.) So there!

Okay, I'm working on this piece, touching it up daily, still not really coming together, maybe not everyone's thing, but it is definitely bad art to some of us, anyway, I hope to have it there for 2014, give it a go at adoption, who knows, maybe a space in some other fuckos foyer.... It's called Life as Art. I'll bring my own chair to sit in.

On last night's walk, I found an old folio (?) of a german sculptor, with mounted photos (in black and white) all in a great big "envelope". I'm thinking post-war, based on typeface. Now, I have to figure out how to mail it...

Ah, Fishy's duck, not Ratty's.

I don't know why, but I just love it to death, when you call us fuckos. Some weirdly connected synapse fires off.

Tackling the sad task of sorting the Gifting Box leftovers, and the smaller art pieces which no one wanted. Lots of broken things, bits and pieces, bad gift ideas. Some is art fodder, some is just more stuff I need to make decisions about. I have hoarder tendencies which require me to toss things if I get more than my existing containers can take. This chore can be an emotional burden for me if I can see items were once cherished. Ouch.

Hey, Antim, did anybody want those giant crystals with a Talisman attached to one end?

If I ever add to that burden, AntiM, please tell me to stuff myself. I struggle with the same things, and some of that means that I pass on stuff I can't bear to throw out. I try not to get too lax, but I don't want to cross that line.

Yes! Most went into the gift box and were taken quickly.

I have the cool painting you donated a few years back on my wall in my sitting room. Just so you know.

I hate to say no, quite a few of the knick-knacky things have ended up on my own shelves. Just remember, playa ready is simplest for me, is it MOOPy, and 2-d is easier than 3-d to display. I'm pretty well set for this year on weird little things, as I didn't get a lot of what you sent/brought before ready for the Home. We have very similar tastes, so I usually love what you send. Now and then I get a "huh?" moment. That's to be expected. Overall, I'd rather say yes than no, because you have a fabulous vision.

I'm currently doing over a porcelain mask you donated, "beading" it with glow in the dark 3D paint. So cool. I'm trying to figure out the best way to display the porcelain bride and groom busts. My grandmother had something similar, so they really strike a note with me.

Oh, all the colorful wood toy animals went to a little two year old boy. He played with them, but his parents said he also gifted them to others. Just marvelous the way it worked out.
