Hi,
I want to be on the temple builidng crew I am an 8 year burner and the temple has been a very import part of my burning man experience. This year my mom is coming out for her first time. She is a professional carpenter who specializes in unique geometric work. Her last project that she was truly artistically inspired by was building a house in the geometry of a nautilus shell with my father. This is the house that I was born in and my father has since passed. I feel like building helping build the temple together could be a really inspiring process for both of us and am hoping we can get on the team. Any suggestions are greatly appreciate. The temple design hasn't been chosen for this year, so there is no way of knowing what team is building it. Once it's announced (which, if my memory is correct, was late spring this year, so I would expect it roughly the same time in 2014), you can contact the temple crew that was chosen and offer them your services.

You can check here on ePlaya, or on the main Burning Man page. Also, we highly recommend signing up for The Jackrabbit Speaks emails if you're not already on there. It will keep you current on everything official going on, from Ticket Sales to the Theme announcement, and any & all important information about the event.

What Eric said. Follow the Jack Rabbit Speaks newsletter, and stay tuned for announcements regarding the temple (as well as other honorarium recipients). That info is typically announced in the spring. From there, you would reach out to the artist (or artists) that are building it about how you can contribute.

Thank you everyone for your response. I am located in Boulder Co. My mother and I are mostly looking to contribute to burning the temple on playa pre festival.

Often you can just show up on playa at the build site and volunteer.
100s of burners have done so over the years.
There is usually a lot of work that needs to be done Sunday, starting in the morning, to get ready for the burn.

Show up, talk to people, bring tools and water, and hover until they take you seriously.

Double-qualified: "for what it's worth" and "as far as I know", the Temple is just another art project as far as the official way it's handled. As such, when art projects are approved and placed (and/or given grant money) then you'll know about the temple (or if there is an official temple.)

I'd suggest you guys strongly consider volunteering with the Temple Guardians. They're a great team that watches over the temple throughout the course of the event.

Just showing up sounds all fine and good, but temple construction is typically finished by the time that the gates are open. Getting early arrival as part of the temple build crew is usually something limited to the people who've been working on the project for some time beforehand (they have a limited number of early arrival passes, it makes sense that they'd distribute them among the people who'd been a part of the project for weeks or months).

All of this is premature though. Sit tight and see who's building what, and then reach out to them directly to let them know what you're willing and able to offer.

By all means the Temple Guardians welcome volunteers. we also have a camp that helps support and interact with the Temple.

Very disappointed at the decision buy the builder to not show the design of the temple before the event. The temple has been a very important part of my experience every year. If not able to help to build with my hands at least with my prayers...

This decision feels more like someone cutting me off from something I love and enjoy.

My opinion is opposite. I'm looking forward to the surprise when I get there.

To me,

The temple is for the myth god and the two thousand years of hysteria that go's with it.

The mono god come along about 400 years BCE..

Speaking personally, I don't think you could be any more wrong, bolerguy. It's important to point out that for the first several years, and in fact I think MOST of the Burning Man temples to date, details of the structure were scant to nonexistent. You are of course to your feelings of self-entitlement and disappointment, but if anything it would be more of a return to form. If you want to feel more included on the creative process of building a piece of big art.... build a piece of big art. I think it's well within any artist's rights to choose what he/she/they want to share in advance of the event, to suggest anything else seems ridiculous to me. I applaud their decision, and don't feel that whether or not I get any teaser/spoiler images it will change the significance of the structure for me.

What an interesting perspective. I definitely don't take it as separatist or non-inclusive in any way. When images of last year's temple were released, I checked it out but it felt like a bit of a spoiler if anything. It's great having the design revealed as you pedal out to it on the playa, MUCH BETTER in my opinion than seeing a drawing of it before arrival. I can't resist a peak, so I'd check out the design if it's released before the burn but I'd prefer that it not be revealed beforehand. As far as creating separation.... kinda stumped. You, I and everyone else will be included in seeing it & enjoying it soon.
