Post by whererusteve » Wed Jan 08, 2014 11:43 pm

Here's what I'm looking to accomplish.... basically a 10ft+ version of this:

Anyone interested in helping out? Hoping to apply for an art grant, kickstarter, etc.

Only problem is I'm based in Hawaii so will need a place to gather materials and transport, etc...

any thoughts?

Are you Walter Russel, or are you just planning on copying his work?

Two years ago there was a camp on esplanade that had a huge one of these suspended from bungee cords. If a participant agreed to strip off all clothing that had metal parts (buttons, zippers, etc) that could scratch the surfaces, they'd put you inside, toss in a few blinking toys, shut a reflectively lid, and shake the whole thing while shouting at you through a megaphone about how you were going through a "tesseract portal" to the playa.

It was a wild ride, and I was sober!
When he lights his streetlamp, it is as if he brought one more star to life, or one flower.
When he puts out his lamp, he sends the flower, or the star, to sleep.
That is a beautiful occupation.

The camp in question was Prometheatrics (About 7:15 and Esplanade). A buddy of mine was camped there this year and they had it (the "Tesseract") there again.

Walter Russell has been dead for 50 years. Pretty interesting theories though....

Yeah that cube sounds like fun but this would be different... i was thinking more for the playa... have a monochrome cube that you could walk around, maybe different buttons around the perimeter that change the light scheme, and rotating stained glass for the day that participants can move around etc... stairs leading up to the viewing area and a chillaxing rest area above....

does anyone know a cheap(ish) way to make a reflective surface that isn't as fragile/expensive/heavy as a glass mirror?

Check out mylar - not a reflective as glass and lower refractive index, and will attract dust, but might work. There have been similar past projects.

Throw in a little Frippertronics as a diversion!
