KognitoKhan looking for collaboration

Postby vachot » Sat Jan 25, 2014 11:22 am

We have a 30' tall fire-spewing art piece that has been set up in camp for the last few years, and now it is ready for the playa. Inspired one dark night in deep playa 2011, KognitoKhan uses brain wave energy from dust-breathing desert travelers to control 10 flame cannons that reach out to the stars and beckon spirits and sprites from afar. The brain wave energy is collected by Neurosky headsets worn by up to 6 burners at a time and is converted to control signals by 6 Arduinos and a propeller CPU. A description of KognitoKhan can be found at vachot.com, but you have to guess the password to get access to the secret pages.

We are applying for an art grant this year because the new flame cannon modifications will be too expensive and everything will be too big to transport from Kalamazoo on our budget. KognitoKhan is a stand-alone art piece, but since it will not be in camp this year, we want shelter for our patrons. We are looking for something that can be set up on the playa in front of or around Kognito as a shelter, or complex of shelters, where travelers can find shade and relax while cogitating on the power of the mind as we contemplate our cosmic journey. An ideal collaboration would be a small contingency with a few medium size shelters (room for about 6 burners to relax on pillows and such), or even one larger shelter with space for at least 12 burners. We envision adding a crew of 1-4 burners to bring, setup and take-down the shelters. We can ask for additional funds for material and transport of the shelters, as well as tickets for the shelter crew.

If you want to be part of an awesome art project that controls fire with your mind, give us a shout.

The piece Mens Amplio did something similar last year and it was amazing with just one participant. Bigger flame cannons and more participants sounds great!

When he lights his streetlamp, it is as if he brought one more star to life, or one flower.
When he puts out his lamp, he sends the flower, or the star, to sleep.
That is a beautiful occupation.

FYI, if your project is awarded an art grant, it typically only covers a small portion of the costs, you will be expected to raise the majority of the funds yourself.
