I have to disagree with that statement. Maybe, "when you're a dick, everything looks like a hole"...

This would make me extremely happy. Not to knock David Best, or raise Embrace, but I love the idea of the Temple concept being taken down a peg or two.
I am with you on this one. I've only been Burning since 2011, so obviously, my opinion is invalid, but... I think the temple is overhyped and underwhelming. It's definitely beautiful, to be sure. But it's also the only place at Burning Man where, apparently, there are distinct rules to follow and you're a terrible human if you so much as bend them in any way. You must be quiet. You must be solemn. You can cry, but you can't laugh. You have to have a memorial. You write on the temple. You must be silent during the burn. You must, you must, you have to, you must, you need to... I don't jive with that, personally.

Really? Just one goddamm hour or so of established quiet time to watch the temple go up is too much for you?
It means a lot to a lot of people.
I guess if you're a crash burning man on the weekend raver frat party type, it's too much repression to deal with.

I bring an M/V with a halfway loud sound system, I've got a bullhorn, I run generators 24/7… I'm not against noise and mayhem. But one goddamm quiet hour for the temple burn is too much out of the whole week? Come on man!

I pretty much don't pay attention to the temple. When my husband died, I put some of his ashes in the man and some in the temple. The man resonated with me more. I didn't need anyone to be quiet while he burned.

I was out there for two weeks last year doing set-up, so I'm not really a weekend raver frat type, but thanks for trying. My problem is with the prescribed way you MUST experience the temple. There is apparently no other valid way to do it, and people will go all the way to yelling and screaming to establish silence. I find that a little ironic.

Yeah, I carefully avoided directly saying you were a raver party crasher, I'm quite sure you aren't. No direct offense intended. In fact we don't seem to even have those weekend party crashers anymore, they disappeared years ago when tickets became so expensive and unavailable at the gate.
I do get what you mean, but having one quiet event does require that everyone STFU.
I'm not personally "into" the Temple thing but I can respect those who are, and it's just a very short time event and a relatively small space in BRC, that all week long a short distance away from you can make all the noise you want. Why be upset over it?

I love the contrast from Saturday burn night where BRC is as rockin' as it can get, everyone has everything they've got cranked to 11, to Sunday night with the entire city silent all at once. Both are such extremes that are fun to witness.

Normally I see pretty much eye-to-eye with the Captain, but not on this. Not everyone at the Temple is mourning a loss, some are celebrating it - the loss of cancer, the loss of a bad relationship, the loss of a bad chapter in their lives, the loss of something they are ecstatic to see go - nobody but nobody has the right to tell someone that they have to "be quiet" when the burning of the Temple is taking their pain away (or doing whatever it's doing for them). I think the person yelling at someone to shut-up, without knowing the reason the person is cheering, is a much bigger ass.

This is also why I watch the Big Burns from a distance - fuck someone else telling me how to do it. If I need quiet, I'll remove myself to where I can get it. If I want to scream and cheer as the reminders of an ugly situation go up in flames, I'll remove myself so I don't have to listen to the entitled assholes tell me that I don't have a right to do so.

Not to mention that "mourning" isn't always quiet to begin with. That happens to be the form we're used to. Those of us who aren't Irish, for beginners.

Maybe the problem is looking at it like people are imposing rules like "You MUST". I look at the temple as something that's intensely emotional and spiritual to a lot of people, and as such I am respectfully solemn and quiet while it burns, and it irritates me when other people are not. No you don't HAVE to be quiet by some liege's decree, but try to be respectful of the other burners and the experience they are trying to have. I don't think people are yelling because of "rules", I think they are yelling because people are pissing them off by interfering with their experience. People would get upset if you ran into a meditation workshop and started yelling and throwing things too; sure it's your burn, but it's everyone else's burn too.

Having said that, back to the OP, it's the end of June. Surely there must be some concept drawings or something by now. I wonder if Mr. Best and the Borg are using this disruption as an opportunity to keep it a surprise until people see it in person. I could jive with that.

well, THERE is the problem...

you're irritable.

and it's NOT A GODDAMN MEDITATION WORKSHOP

BTW, it's this type of bullshit contrived reverence for the temple that makes me avoid it like the plague...both during the week and when it burns....i'd rather be in Reno eating a nice monte cristo than listen to the so-called buddhists and yoga pushers bitch about the solemnity being broken by someone making noise.
