Spinning fire before the Man burns

So I've been doing reading about how exactly one becomes part of the fire spinning performance prior to the burning of the Man. Apparently you can only apply as a group. The group must have at least 19 members, be organized using a specific type of hierarchy and have a choreographed routine. Is this the sort of thing an individual can get in on once they hit the Playa? Or is this more like your group needs to be formed before Burning Man and have been practicing your routine for months together? I'm guessing the latter, but it never hurts to ask!

It's this. In addition, the groups audition before the burn (first deadline is March 1) and not every group is selected to perform. Doesn't mean you can't try to join or support a local group though.
