here is the question.
should Large Sound Camps ADVERTISE their "massive" line-ups?
especially this far out from the event?
or even at all?
WHAT SAY YOU???

i too like the idea of SPONTANEITY and participation as opposed to pre planned pre-booked and a rigorous schedule with Spectators

It bothers me that White Ocean (what is that? a promoter, a tour name?) is using Burning Man as a venue for their brand. If they like the event, and like being there, then they should just show up and do their thing, and have that be their contribution. No advertising. I agree it encourages spectating.
I'm curious about whether the D.J.'s are paid, are just flying in for a gig, or are participants as well.

White Ocean is the only big sound camp I paid any attention to last year because we were placed right near them. My response to their DJ line up was;
Paul Oakenfold? That name sounds kinda familiar. If even I've heard of him he must be pretty well known I guess *shrug*
I've never been very good at knowing things about music.

Bless, i am all about radical inclusion.
i am not about a dangerous imbalance.
good fences make for good neighbors, and i'm afraid the cows have begun to run rampant, and not stay in their grazing area.
thats why we need more cowbell, keeps them in line...

thats like the worse metaphor ever.
effective, but wow....mashing up don't fear the reaper/ cowbell / sound camps into one giant loop including subtle references to Cows grazing on BLM land was inspired, but...

There's a sound camp named white ocean?
The only sound camp I went to intentionally was root society and that was just to see simon. The ones we ran into wandering around in deep playa were awesome, but I wouldn't know a famous dj if they came up and said " hi I'm a famous dj"
I do think the edm part of Burningman is getting a little out of hand. But if this deal is participant driven as claimed, we other participants need to voice ourselves more I suppose.

What's the point of all those different DJs? Don't they just stick a flash drive into the computer with all the top-100 songs they downloaded from Beatport and cobbled together with automated synchronizers with some tweaking? It's not like they're composing music on the fly. Maybe they also have some of those electronic turn tables connected via a USB connection, or maybe just hit the play button in iTunes and then pump their fists while people stare at him?
Sure, for some I like the sound, and the mix, but do we really need the DJs? Aren't they just wasting tickets? What do they even do that they can't do at home and send a
tape CD flash drive in? Right? The fact that the DJ is there in front of his pre-made creation is completely redundant. We might as well inflate a blow-up doll and stick it in front of some TVs with the visualizers they show on the demo TVs at Costco.
The worst is watching some of those videos on Youtube with those big DJ concerts. All the video does is pan around to make it look like there's something going on besides jumping people and the DJ pumping his fist. But really, there's really nothing else to it. The lights and the big speakers (and whatever pills people took) are the big show, not the dude sitting in his booth in front of his Macbook Pro.
This is probably why I like visiting these sound camps/cars at Burning Man: everyone's sound systems are grand, so if I get bored of the mix at one place I can go wander off to hear someone else.
And knowing DJ lineups beforehand? More like
after-hand. The only reason I want to know a DJ's name is so that I can find the podcast of their mix to find "that one song" I thought sounded cool. It's not like the DJ is even composing that music (just stitching it together). Oh, and fuck those DJs that don't list the tracks of the mix.

One of those disturbing moments at BM for me:
.....Checking out big sound camps many burns ago (2007?) and one was packed so tight with bodies no one could even dance 'cept those on the raised platforms. I asked what was up and told "Paul Oakenfold".
If he had gone on stage with makeup or a mask, with no announcement of who he was, him not playing his "hits", the place probably would have been as sad as those familiar sights on the Esplanade: a large sound camp, big ass sound, a DJ and two of his friends (or nobody) dancing. Sometimes the DJ not even there. (yes, birgins, you will see it too...)
And if not this year (with no attempts by BM to discourage cell phones, in fact, giving guidance to camps running wi-fi) soon there will be twittering, messages of some hot scene going instantly to thousands who might go on a playa exploration without water/mask/sunscreen but NEVER without their "device"....then, the humble theme camp with hotness will be overrun and have to shut down, and probably a few bike accidents of those speeding to get there before the crush that they know will stop the uniqueness and mood of whatever is going on.
Now, you kids get off my lawn!

My old roommate, who did not know how to wash dishes, shut a door, not put cigarettes out on the floor, wipe his own ass without his mommas help.... he wants to go to the Burn because he knows it's a big rave. Great. When he asked me what it was other than a big rave, his eyes glazed over as I started to rant. God, the exact type of person I would do whatever to prevent attending... Last year I brought a newbie, who went out every night to soundcamps. This was her plan going in. As part of our arrangement, she reluctantly helped me run my bar out by the trash fence one afternoon. She told me she was surprised how fun that was, she didn't think bringing ice cold drinks to the furthest reaches and handing them out to strangers would work out as well as it did. She could conceive of the Burn being an all night rave, no problem, but kicking it with other weirdos in the desert...? Not so much. Her bike was stolen at the sound camp one night. I laughed.

I was going to say "really famous people don't usually introduce themselves as being famous" but if the stereotypes about DJs are even half true that probably doesn't apply to them.

i'd like to clarify something.
i am not against Big Name DJ's. I am not against Big Sound….i love the shit, you know that. some of my good friends are objects of cults of personality, i don't begrudge them success or fame.
think of it this way…..what is better, suddenly coming across one of your favorite "acts" out of nowhere on some random venue VS. showing up at an appointed "time & Place" to see a prefab set, exactly one hour long, because you know, there's a fucking schedule to adhere to…
hell it was ADVERTISED….
one is serendipitous bliss, the other is defaultia expectations.
and you know what happens when you have expectations.
and…..whats to stop Pershing County or any other Official Agency from trying to designate BM as a "music festival" vs. an "art festival", because , you know, the fuck you fees and taxes almost double in Nevada for that shit, and look…... we have Music Line-ups being ADVERTISED, way in advance of the event.
just warning'...

Spot on! We already have a congresswoman down in Vegas who wants to start taxing/new fee this event because it's not just a party in the desert. She sees it as a venue, etc and should be subject to fees/taxes in accordance with other concerts, events.

Burning Man has to stay undefinable.
Once we're pidgin holed they'll find a way to tax.
