Re: Idea: All Newbie Camp, suggestions?
For anyone who's interested Camp Birgin(Burgin? BMVirgin? Virgin Camp?) is starting up with a forum. It might be slow at the moment, but post up any ideas and questions and watch for it to pick up in activity after the first of next year.

This is a free forum, so forgive any ads there, we can pay to remove them if they get bad.

I'm renaming the thread to match the camp name. Good luck with your prep and planning!

Re: Birgin Camp 2014
Suggestions for a theme camp "owner" mayor or whatever you want to call it. DO NOT MAKE A THEME CAMP YOUR FIRST YEAR, DON'T EVEN DO IT YOIR SECOND YEAR.
Ok why? You will need to be at home to host your camp. You will miss out on soooooooo much of the burn. Plus not only that, the logistics of planning even a camp under 50 people is a fucking nightmare! Trust me. I planned our whole camp last year. The logistics are insanity. Don't do it.

Re: Birgin Camp 2014
Sounds like they're doing more of a village. Being an organizer does take up time and money, but if they aren't doing scheduled events or looking for placement, having no dues and requiring each member to bring their own stuff, then having a camp isn't so bad. The other stag/orphan camps do just fine.

Agreed, AntiM. And perhaps the real message here should be "do what you want, knowing it might not work".
Dont let others experiences sour yours. If you have food, water and shade, you are doing it right!

Re: Birgin Camp 2014
With ticket information now available, Birgin camp will become a solid reality when the first of us buys their ticket. From there, it's just a matter of slow and steady prep until the burn.

Re: Birgin Camp 2014
Divreon, my idea for shade is a pitch tent out of two tarps, my tent is 9x8 so I figure that will work well but let's not forget i'm a virgin too (fantastic!) so I could end up in the med tent. As for drama, it's been my experience that you put a few hens in the same space and there's going to be drama.

With how every post a newb posts on here is scrutinized , I have to wonder if a whole camp of newbs will just become the "leper colony".

Re: Birgin Camp 2014
If you look closely, newbie posts aren't the only ones scrutinized. You may care to check out this article on snark.
I doubt that you'd be treated as a leper colony, any more than any of the others who've done similar in the past (though the camps I've heard of had an actual art theme, and didn't treat their inexperience as the camp's theme). Or any of the orphan camps... or any other camp for that matter.

Ticket purchased, confirmation in hand.
So now, even if it turns out Birgin camp is a camp of one, it will happen.

In 2013 I did, 4 people plus gear/food/water, and I still have no idea how we defied the rules of physics to make it happen.BBadger wrote:

Re: Birgin Camp 2014
Hey Divreon,
You've been getting a LOT of really good suggestions for your camp. I've been going since 96 and worked DPW for 4 years so I'll throw in my 2 cents worth;
Probably THE single most important thing for everyone attending to do is to READ AND HEED THE SURVIVAL GUIDE! They are not kidding one damn bit about what conditions may be like out there.
Useful Tips and Suggestions are also to be found on the site. Some may sound silly but a lot of them are time-tested and can make the difference between a miserable experience and a great time.
Here are a few more esoteric suggestions;
1) Leave your expectations at home, they only limit you
2) Go with an open mind, an open heart and willing hands, say "hi" to your neighbors and when you can, offer to help out.
3) Sensory overload is the rule not the exception. Take the time to see what's in front of you. Don't go chasing after every loud noise or blinky thingie you encounter you'll just wear yourself out!
4) S L O W D O W N! Be sure to take care of yourself, you're never going to see everything anyway so don't even try. Besides there's likely to be plenty going on right in your "neighborhood."
5) Have an "Exit" plan in mind. If things aren't going well and you want to leave early? That's O.K. I usually wait 24 hours before executing to see if things turn around for me.

Re: Birgin Camp 2014
So, My sister died. That's bad.
She may have been murdered. That's worse.
She had a 7 Year old girl. Even Worse.
That 7 year old is being fought over by a responsible party, and a compulsive liar/gambler who wants the potential murderer more involved in the girls life. I can't even think it's so bad.
Given the above. I need to bail out. I have a burning man ticket, and a burner express ticket to sell, dont even know how that works...
Out of everything I'm dealing with, selling my ticket and giving up BM is the hardest. I might end up homeless and jobless(because my boss, is my landlord, is my father, who is funding the compulsive liar/gambler's legal case) but that's not the thing that's hitting home.
So as much as I need it right now, I'm out. I'm sorry everyone.
There's still a great group of Virgin Burners making a go of the event, and I wish them all my best. I'll see them in the dust eventually, but I won't be with them.

Divreon, I'm so sorry. I can't imagine.
You'll probably be able to sell your ticket easily depending on the circumstances under which you purchased it.
https://ticketsupport.burningman.com/
The Burner Express ticket is apparently non-transferrable and non-refundable. (Were it me, I'd ask then anyway, figuring I had nothing to lose.)
