Re: OUCH!!! Think our Village got screwed over, need help.
Depending on cell or internet service for finding your campmates is another really bad plan, but I find it difficult to believe that among 100 of you, no one can come up with a plan. With all those people and all that stuff, I'm sure you can create a highly visible and easily recognizable camp flag/sign/marker. That combined with leaving notices at playa info, where all your campmates have been briefed to look during one of your camp meetings… I mean, you guys teach people how to prepare for Burning Man, right?
This whole thing is just stupid. You have no emergency, your village isn't screwed. Last year around 5-ish out past G there were was vast acreage available… Black Rock City is plenty big. It doesn't matter which street you're on. If you build it, they will come.

Re: OUCH!!! Think our Village got screwed over, need help.
Our issue was probably due to darkness and tiredness more than spatial awareness. We always study the city map in detail and plan out a search route to look for a site in the non-placement zones, but it's dark and busy and frantic, with ropes and flags laid out everywhere, makes searching with a caravan of cars difficult.... you all know the drill. Good to hear there have been pockets open, it's probably encouraging for the OP to hear that there's still opportunities to camp closer in.
One thing we've noticed is that areas that are roped off on Sunday night end up "un-roped" on Monday, as people get set up and reduce their sprawl of their claimed footprint. So maybe arriving Monday am is a good alternative? (Separate thread for that topic...). We're hoping it's a moot point for us this year and we get our Placement approved. Cheers.

Becuz I'm sick that way, i was looking at what you provide and what you bring. Unkess i really dont understand your posts ( you had 2 threads? ) you are severely under prepared.
55 gallon drum of water? ( sound of buzzer)
40 people x min 5 gallons is 200 gallons per day.
Where's the kitchen?
40 people is (very minimum) 10 pounds of rice a day, plus protein (min 20 pounds of chicken),

Re: OUCH!!! Think our Village got screwed over, need help.
Ah, that awkward time of year when people who've never been start tearing apart posts from people who have...
It's probably not necessary to start picking apart the details of what the camp is or is not planning to bring or build, as the discussion is largely about a camp that's missed a hard deadline by weeks, and what their options may be. To those offering great suggestions on how the group can successfully get to the playa and stake a claim once the gates open (as well as connect with campmates and friends), good job and keep 'em coming. It sounds like unfamiliar territory for them, so tips and tricks and encouragement would probably go a long way in helping them avoid a camp-wide freakout.
@BringHeat - I suggest reading through those tips and suggestions, there's some good stuff in this thread and you and your campmates can do it. Remember, most camps at Burning Man are not placed and do not have early entry, making it out like it's some kind of terrible ordeal you shouldn't have to be made to suffer does kind of come off as some kind of dig on all those camps. Though you haven't said it in here some others have hinted at it, so I'll add this reminder - early arrivals passes are not transferable between camps or projects, and may not be bought/sold/bartered/gifted.
@asr9754 - yeah, darkness can do it too. I also have a tendency to get completely confused when I run into one of the bigger village blocks.

Re: OUCH!!! Think our Village got screwed over, need help.
Those big village blocks could spell a disaster for first responders.. It is hard enough to walk through one let alone respond to an emergency.. I would suggest leaving the camp size and general layout.. Leave the streets run through.. They would make good fire breaks.. People in the camp would have fewer people walking into there home camp.. Also the camp would have more street frontage..
Last year I was camped on the street.. More people arrive and camped behind.. They were not good neighbors.. The guys next to me left a two foot space between our camps.. I made sure there was a good wide passage on the other side.. Instead of using the wide passage (six paces from the two foot one) the rear campers walked and rode there bikes through our dinner, bath and sleep..

Re: OUCH!!! Think our Village got screwed over, need help.
My historically unplaced camp did exactly this for years. We would pick a side of the city & agree ahead of time that we were aiming for between 7:00 and 9:00. This was broad enough that we could get it, but narrow enough to start.Trilobyte wrote:Arriving in BRC and "coordinating the landing" isn't too tough, the quick and dirty tip is to make an "intersection sign" and then have a camp sign (or flag) that's ready to plant once you find that spot. The intersection sign should have the camp name (and symbol, if you've got one) plus space to write the actual location once you find it. That sign will get posted at an intersection in the area you guys are aiming for, one that all your campmates know to start looking for once they arrive. They'll know what the sign looks like when they arrive, see that final location, then be able to find you easily. Once they go to that spot, they'll easily be able to spot that sign (or flag), and then see familiar faces.
Leadership took pains to arrive right when gate opened.
One nicely pre-painted sign was posted securely on the outermost streetpost, with a camp name and arrow pointing inward. For example, at outer street + 7:30.
Everyone would turn right and head in, looking for the 2nd sign. For example, at H street. It would either point left (toward 7:40) or right (toward 7:25, for example).
The 3rd sign was out by the street, like a sandwich board or flag. (It could help if photos of the signs are circulated within the camp before the event.)
Then a bicyclist was dispatched to Playa Info, to list the camp position in their system, as back-up.
P.S. Virgins should be told to recalibrate their expectations if not getting placement would crush them. I've not been placed 8 out of the 9 times I've Burned. It didn't cramp my style at all. I'm sure there are some very high-class virgins out there, but they should not be encouraged in that trait, or they may have a shit time and make it your issue to solve.

Just in case anyone thinks I'm too harsh on the crybaby OP of this thread...
Last year, my spot in my preregistered, placed camp was already inhabited by someone who wasn't supposed to be right there and was in fact right in the middle of our place when my campmates and I arrived (on early entry passes even!) and I ended up out back, and not having access to the camp's power grid. Well fuck it, it's Burning Man... There's no bad place. I set up where I set up, ran my own power, and made it work.
Burning Man accomplished! I even met a really cool neighbor where I ended up instead.
So the Mayor blew Plan A. It's Burning Man... go with Plan B! It beats the hell out of staying home.
