Has anyone heard from Placement?

Post by LowePro » Wed Jun 25, 2014 9:34 am

Other than the email blast newsletters, has anyone heard from Placement team?

I know they say the decisions will be made in early July, but I guess we thought there might be some back-and-forth email questions or details exchanged during the review process. Just curious what others have experienced. Thanks all. We have our first Camp meeting since submitting the Questionnaire tonight and I know they'll want an update. I'll tell them to shut up and wait.

(I edited this post in a vain attempt to contain thread-drift.....Back to the regularly scheduled question at hand)

Generally, Placement goes off of what they have on the questionnaires. They probably have close to a thousand camps requesting placement (+/-), not all of those are going to get spots, and they don't have time to figure out which to approve, then do the jigsaw puzzle of placement, all while trying to ask camps to clarify little points. None of this is said to worry you, it's just how it works. They should be deep in the layout stage at this point, but no camps are going to hear where they're at (or if they're placed) until that's finalized.

I would tell your camp to hang tight about placement, you're in the same situation as every other camp, and it will probably be mid-July before you know. Keep planning everything else, have a best-case & worst-case ready, so if your layout isn't what you hoped for (or is smaller or larger than what you requested), or if you don't get placement (worst case scenario) you have some ideas in play to deal with it.

If it's a Hotwire "4 star", it's on P block, and has a view of the United Services staging area.

Ok, thanks for the information; seems likely that very few camps, if any, have heard individually from the Placement team. This is the boat we're in.

Another Placement email blast just landed today, so the team must be hard at work.

We've heard from placement to confirm they got our message about being happy to be placed anywhere after they asked for camps requesting 7:30 who are happy to move to get in touch. That email didn't include any secret info or hints not already available through the newsletters. Unless you've had cause to email them they're not going to email you. They're busy.

And for what it's worth I think it's pretty rude to edit your post after someone has replied to it and change the bit they were referring to. Even if to avoid thread drift. You could have just replied and said you meant since submitting your application and I would have had no reason to comment on it further. As it is editing your post resulted in me posting again to reassure Fishy that I can in fact read and now this meta comment. Just relax. Threads drift a bit and placement doesn't email to ask how your day was.

Got newsletter #4 today, still estimating mid july for placement.
FWIW... I would love placement, but have backup plans.
Maybe you need to develop Plan B? ... Just sayin'...

Editing is a normal part of a board, and unless the part that was edited out included a personal attack, we're fine with it (if it included a personal attack and was on the board for any length of time it's bad). We do limit the time a person can make edits to avoid some of the problems associated with it being a free-for-all, but if they were editing for clarity (which seems to be the case here) it's probably a good thing for the thread over-all, even if one post commented on that bit.

Everywhere else like this I've been it is generally considered poor form to edit something if it's going to make someone who has already replied look like an idiot. Once someone has replied the convention is you reply in tern rather altering what you originally said. Or at least you make a note that you edited for clarity. That has since happened but between my first post and Fishy's an edit was made that negated my next comment and has just made stuff confusing. I'm just pointing out that this is clearly not best practice. If it were we wouldn't now be having this meta conversation.

Deep breaths, jovankat. If we're primarily concerned with rudeness, I think the public complaint is the ruder of the two ;)

Getting back to asr's question... Hopefully, as a percentage, this year is a reduction over years past because both the questionnaire has improved and also people are doing a better job writing up their camp's plans. Placement has been reaching out to camps over the last couple months as necessary, usually it's quick and dirty to clarify something that was unclear in the questionnaire.

For updates, you could summarize some of the info that they've included over the last half dozen or so newsletters sent out to camp coordinators. I can also share that more camps have requested placement this year than ever before. Despite the increase they're in the home stretch now, and on track to get camps notified in early July. Have a great meeting, tell your campmates ePlaya said hi! :D

Well I'll guess we'll have to agree to disagree then but at least I didn't condescend to asr9754 with concern troll "calm down dear" language.
