Now wait a minute. CaffeineGirl said she had a 32' RV. Anyone whose RV is over 31' IS an elitist rich fuck. 31' is the cutoff between average Joe and the privileged well-to-do. Everyone knows that.

Re: 2014 East Coast Convoy To Burning Man
I thought the cutoff was 32 feet 3 1/2 inches?
To the uninitiated (ie people planning their first burn), something like an RV or big camp infrastructure seems like some kind of ridiculously crazy expense on top of a ton of other ridiculously crazy expenses that they're just now starting to wrap their heads around as they plan their first trip. For a lot of people, prepping for that first burn can be an all-consuming thing that sucks up all your time and empties your wallet. The idea of someone having an RV for Burning Man just seems ridiculous, like they must get around by helicopter and wipe their asses with fifty dollar bills or something.
Another thing that new people sometimes have a hard time with is tolerance, and accepting the idea that there is often many different solutions to a given problem. It can drive people crazy - we see it on the boards here a lot. There are as many different ways to burn as there are burners. So long as they respect the land and their neighbors, it's okay if they (or you for that matter) do it differently.

Perfect, Elliot. You were one of the many heavy haulers I had in mind. And I have NEVER seen you wipe your butt with anything bigger than a $1 bill.

On to helping you figure out how to get yourself to Black Rock City and set yourself up to live in reasonable comfort!
Seriously, it's a great thing, but like other things that are that worth it, it's gonna take quite an effort. That's part of what makes it so great; everyone there made a huge effort to be there and you have that in common with everyone.
If it was easy, it would probably suck.

So, more in tune with the original point of the thread. Is anyone driving from Delaware or Philly out to BRC? I'm not sure if I'm going to fly or drive. I'd be a lot more comfortable driving if I had someone else tagging along. My beat up old 2001 Saab 93 ain't what she used to be!

You may want to hit up NYC area burners, I know there are a few. Taking 80 across?

Planning on taking 80, but I can go to the south to meet up with DC burners as well. It's equidistant.

Well, I found a $188 round trip ticket into Vegas so, I bought it. I'll be visiting my parents in LV and then borrowing their car to drive up to BRC. No convoy for me!

Convoy from Vegas? It's at least 9 hours in a car!

In my fantasy world, I buy and restore a little camper and drive it out there myself.

I was figuring closer to 15 hours given the traffic I will undoubtedly run into! Hopefully I'll run into some burners on the road.9ah wrote:Convoy from Vegas? It's at least 9 hours in a car!

Nah, 70's where it's at. Nothing like St. Louis during evening rush hour, which I get caught in....every year. When will I learn? Dogs are the leaders of the planet. If you see two life forms, one of them’s making a poop, the other one’s carrying it for him, who would you assume is in charge?

You'll be taking the Spooky desert route!chuckularone wrote:I was figuring closer to 15 hours given the traffic I will undoubtedly run into! Hopefully I'll run into some burners on the road.9ah wrote:Convoy from Vegas? It's at least 9 hours in a car!
There is no real traffic from Vegas to Fernley.
We make it to a rest stop at Armagosa valley about midnight Saturday and sleep.
Start again when it starts to get light out and arrive at the Fernley Love's truck stop about 1pm Sunday.
Fill up the vehicles and drive to the very back of the truck stop where there's a big vacant lot.
Take a nap till 4pm because you never know what that last 80 miles is going to have in store for you, so it's nice to be rested.
2 to 6 hours depending on breakdowns and accidents on 447 will get you to the end of the line at gate.
The last 2 years we've been parked at camp before dark Sunday evening.

Re: 2014 East Coast Convoy To Burning Man
Yes, please listen to FIGJAM, I have done that drive north from Vegas twice and it is pretty scary... long dark stretches of nothing, no phone signal, no traffic, nose dive down a mountain sideways, whoops 25 mph limit for the tribal police who are waiting to get you. Found a McDonalds open, went in for coffee, the guy behind the counter had never been to the next town north, did not know what we were talking about. Wind full of grit. Critters on the road. Oh and buy gas every place you can because there are long stretches where you can't.
MGB, St Louis does have good beer but I am not doing that southern route again. There are too many creepy dudes and how-to-date-your-daughter books in the highway rest stops.
VC!!! Buy that camper!!! We stop & sleep every night, so it takes us about 3 and a half days. MGB takes, I think, about 2 weeks to get to BRC from Virginia.

Re: 2014 East Coast Convoy To Burning Man
Oh yes, MDF, I am a slow one. I turn it from Central Va. to Calpine, Ca. in 2 1/2 days, towing my camper. My Sat-Nav said in 2012 I turned 3000 miles with an average of 74. You can always find me in the left lane. I don't talk to the "creepy guys", I just might be one!

Yeah. The real problem is that I don't have a garage to do the work. I'm in a condo. I either need to make a real lifestyle change or figure out if we still have space in the garage of one of our buildings. Either way, not something for the immediate future.

Stick with your condo, VC; home is home.
You might find a nice garage or warehouse space to rent, to work in?
And yeah MGB
of course you drive like a bat out of hell, but, you don't go directly to BRC, is all I'm sayin.
And no you are not creepy.

One of the buildings in our office park might actually have a garage I could use for free.
I mentioned it to my dad's long time secretary. She's more like my aunt than my actual aunts. She told me to just go and do it. Maybe for next year.

If nobody objects I might join up in the caravan from Vegas to BRC. I'm traveling solo in a pickup and tiny travel trailer.
