CARAVANSARY

Caravansary - This year we will create a caravansary that occupies the crossroads of a dreamland: a bazaar of the bizarre wherein treasures of every sort, from every land and age, flow in and out to be flaunted, lost, exploited and discovered. This is not a tourist destination, but a home for travelers who come here bearing gifts. Amid the twisting and the turnings of its souk, participants will come upon an inexhaustible array of teeming goods and unexpected services. Anyone may pose as 'merchant' here, and anyone may play a 'customer', but nothing in this strange emporium shall have a purchase price — no quid, no pro, no quo — no trade at all will be allowed in this ambiguous arcade. According to a rule of desert hospitality, the only thing of value in this 'marketplace' will be one's interaction with a fellow human being.

Are you a native american? If so, pursuant to law originating in the 1800's, you can not be barred from riding a horse on federal land.

If you are not a native american, you may pass unimpeded on federal land via horseback if you are carrying a prisoner, or the corpse of a prisoner, to the nearest Marshal or Sheriff, or are looking for branded livestock.

The idea of a bunch of weary travelers hauling all of their shit across the desert to hang out and share hooch and shoot the shit around a fire isn't bad at all.

I don't know how they would top the man base last year. We didn't go; just saw pictures. The crowd has more than doubled in size since I first saw the man, and Burning Man itself is indeed growing. I like it. This is going to be fucking awesome.

I could make and carry a few hammock frame to set up as a caravansary.

My design can be shelter covered in a 10x10 foot print w/6 ft head room..

Caravanserai readings

Post by Ugly Dougly » Fri Jan 10, 2014 9:45 am

We dismounted to gaze at the venerable minarets and the green dome which covers the tomb of the Prophet. The heat was dreadful, the climate dangerous, and the beasts died in numbers. Fresh carcasses strewed our way, and were covered by foul vultures. The Caravan was most picturesque. We traveled principally at night, but the camels had to perform the work of goats, and step from block to block of basalt like mountaineers, which being unnatural to them, they kept up a continual piteous moan. The simoom and pillars of sand continually threw them over.

Water is the great trouble of a Caravan journey, and the only remedy is to be patient and not to talk. The first two hours gives you the mastery, but if you drink you cannot stop. Forty-seven miles before we reached Mecca, at EI Zaribah, we had to perform the ceremony of EI Ihram, meaning 'to assume the pilgrim garb'. A barber shaved us, trimmed our moustaches; we bathed and perfumed, and then we put on two new cotton cloths, each six feet long by three and a half broad. It is white, with narrow red strips and fringe, and worn something as you wear it in the baths. Our heads and feet, right shoulder and arm, are exposed.

The thing I like about this theme is that it is something the city itself can buy into. The public face of any camp can benefit from this theme.

I still think that the best Burningman costume will be something akin to a 1850s U.S. Dragoon Cavalry unit trooper, one from Camp Verde. (with the US Camel Corps). Think I'm kidding?

Not a chance.
