Ugly Dougly wrote:On the first part of the journey, I was looking at all the life. We dismounted to gaze at the venerable minarets. There were plants and birds and rocks and things there was sand and hills and rings. The first thing I met was the green dome which covers the tomb of the Prophet, a fly with a buzz, and the sky with no clouds. The heat was dreadful, the ground was dry, the climate dangerous, and the beasts died in numbers, but the air was full of sound. I've been through the desert on a horse with no name, fresh carcasses strewed our way, and were covered by foul vultures. In the desert you can remember your name 'Cause there ain't no one for to give you no pain. The Caravan was most picturesque. After two days in the desert sun, my skin began to turn red. We traveled principally at night, but the camels had to perform the work of goats, and step from block to block of basalt like mountaineers, which being unnatural to them, they kept up a continual piteous moan. The simoom and pillars of sand continually threw them over.
After three days in the desert fun, I was looking at a river bed.The story it told of a river that flowed, made me sad to think it was dead. Water is the great trouble of a Caravan journey, and the only remedy is to be patient and not to talk. You see I've been through the desert on a horse with no name, the first two hours gives you the mastery. It felt good to be out of the rain, but if you drink you cannot stop. In the desert you can remember your name. 'Cause there ain't no one for to give you no pain. Forty-seven miles before we reached Mecca, at EI Zaribah, I let the horse run free 'Cause the desert had turned to sea. We had to perform the ceremony of EI Ihram, meaning 'to assume the pilgrim garb'. After nine days, there were plants and birds and rocks and things; there was sand and hills and rings. A barber shaved us, trimmed our moustaches. The ocean bathhouse is a desert with it's life underground; so we bathed and perfumed, and then we put on two new cotton cloths, each six feet long by three and a half broad -- a perfect disguise above. It is white, with narrow red strips and fringe, and worn something as you wear it in the baths. Under the cities cloths lies a heart made of ground; our heads and feet, right shoulder and arm, are exposed, but the humans will give no love.

Maybe it's just me, but I keep thinking about the scene in the movie 'Circle of Iron' where the seeker Cord meets the caravan.
It could be interesting.
