Just how many insects have to die in order to make a yard of silk?
And then you can dye it red!
And then you can dye it red!

I do find it contradictory that the theme for an event that pretends to be strictly non-commercial is a concept born of commerce...

Yep. More things that make you say huh?
But, since my camp gives silk scarves as our gift, I rather like it.

I equated "silk road" with "treasure trail", more in the grooming sense.

Ouch. Can't we say that there's been a recent addition to the term? "Transcends" sounds like it has surpassed Mr. Polo and the spice trade, which is actually a very hard thing to do.Sunbeam56 wrote:Ummm.... Silk Road has a meaning that transcends Marco Polo and the fabric/spice trade.

Re: Silk Road
Most of us in the west think of the silk road as one camel trail..
The silk roads were like our interstate high ways to the far east..
The more famous one runs though the khyber pass.. In the day the top of the pass was only wide enough for one animal at a time..

Re: Silk Road
I like that there's some squidginess to people's understanding or interpretation of what it might be. Whether they think it's one road, or realize that it was many (and some of those routes changed over the years). Or if they consider that there were lots of trails and paths and routes that connected to all those connecting points. Aside from moving physical goods and facilitating trade, it was also a massive information superhighway in its own right, with merchants and travelers carrying along news, information, knowledge and culture. And over the course of countless decades, styles and trends and art and culture flowed back and forth and mashed up along the way.

Below is a snapshot of the connections just in China, at some point in history

FYI, this site has lots of little bits of interesting info collected, you may find it useful when reading up or exploring the subject, or when riffing on ideas.

I don't suppose this year's theme is a good reason to reread Declare, but rereading Declare doesn't need any other reasons...
