Elliot's Bicycle Service & Piano Bar

Post by Elliot » Tue Oct 14, 2014 6:07 pm

:D
Elliot's Bicycle Service and Piano Bar,
featuring Miss Sunbeam's Bacon Tamale Kitchen!

It’s a bird… it’s a plane… it’s a... paianna!

Yesss indeeeed, we are adding a piano to the Bicycle Service,
creating Elliot’s Piano Bar and Bicycle Service for 2015.

Image

There it is, the day I brought it home. The price was $40.-, and I paid in quarters.
Now we just need people who can play, because I cannot.

But I can fix bicycles! And so can several other folks we have shanghaied into such service over the years,
so Bicycle Repair will still be our main attraction.

Image

There he is, the camp instigator himself, with a freshly repaired wheel and a happy customer.

We expect shop hours will be the same as before; 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., daily.

Last year we added a Do-It-Yourself work station with bicycle tools, and it was a roaring success. So this will be open 24/7 again. You should bring your own spare inner-tubes, but we will have a selection available in case you have already used up all yours.

We also lend bikes. But we need to cut back from the 43 bikes we lent out last year, to make room for the piano and other Stuff. And the reservation list already has 29 names! So you would need a v-e-r-y good reason to beg a Loaner for 2015.

Mechanics are needed! You don’t have to camp with us to fix bikes for a few hours. You can bring your own tools, or use ours. Either way, you get paid in beer. Cheap beer, but cold.

Which brings us to…. The beverage service! As before, we offer beverages to our customers. Cold beer, chilled wine, tepid lemonade, and whatnot else. But we need people to offer these delights to our visitors! So you can participate even if you don’t know a cone wrench from a sprocket.

Food is also on the menu. Last year we added the contingent from Texas to the camp, and Miss Sunbeam served up over 750 steaming Bacon Tamales. She is talking about thousands of them for 2015.

You may have noticed, in the snapshot above, that the chief mechanic works au naturel. This is encouraged for the rest of the Bicycle Service staff, but you may wear whatever you want. The entire bicycle shop is well shaded, so beginner-level skinny-dippers are safe from sunburns.
(Nude is not lewd – we are not an “adult” camp.)

The last three years we have been on 5:00 Street, between G and H Streets. We want to be there again, but we are also considering turning full-fledged Theme Camp, in which case we may wind up in a different location. Stay tuned to this station.
Or just roam around until you see Millicent The Bus. Wherever we are, there she will be, and those eyes never close.

YAY Elliot! :D

You and Millicent certainly qualify as an official theme camp. I hope you're not placed way far away from 5:00 if you do go that route....

Looking forward to it Elliot! We'll have to bring a bottle of wine and stay for a tune or two next time.

Ah yes, music. I've been wanting to bring a small stereo for discrete toe-tapping music. Nothing to interfere with normal conversation, but of good fidelity.
I remember Blueschaser brought some blues, but I did not notice what sort of device he used. Ideally, we would be able to playback any stored music that people might bring. Would you want to take charge of this, Chuck? My own most recent knowledge of music storage and playback involves 8-track cassettes and vacuum tubes.

I'm sure I can scare something up that plays DVD's, has a line in and a USB port. If I search another 30 seconds, I might find something that allows bluetooth connections too...

It's all yours! Just make sure it can play clearly at a low volume, so we can hear ourselves think also. :D

:D
This thread is only a few hours old, and already we have scored new victims recruits for 2015 bicycle service!

Angela & Robert are from Houston, currently living in Oklahoma, and will be coming to their first Burn. Sounds like they will be “stealth birgins”, as they are already deeply involved with preparations. They want to camp by themselves for maximum Self Reliance, but will be coming over to participate with us a bit. Robert is a real-life bicycle mechanic, and Angela will handle Customer Service including Beverages. No word yet on piano skills, but they have 10 months to practice.

So we are off and running!

Oh…. If anyone has photos (that I don’t already have) from our 2014 camp, I would love to have copies.
And I’m hoping to recruit a skilled photographer to take some quality candids of repair activity in 2015. I will bring my equipment, but I want to be in some of the frames myself also.

My (portable) music-to-work-by system was quite simple: iPod plugged into battery-powered speaker box. Downside: not enough volume to be heard more than about 6' away. Would be terrific to be able to plug into a better amplification system and bring The Blues to the repair shop. And Elliot, I'll be sure to have some Fleetwood for ya too, back in their youth as a Blues Band! (As in : almost FIFTY years ago.) An aside for any other Burner Blues lovers out there>>>>Lost Penguin hosts a jam every year at their saloon (among a host of other genres).

You are too kind. (But I'll take it!) What's amazing is the look on some customers' face when I take the three-foot bolt-cutters to their bike. The procedure is a Full Frontal Derailleurectomy.

I wouldn't call myself highly skilled, but I'm decent with a camera. This past burn I was particularly bad about not taking many photos, but I think having a mission would be great motivation to shoot more photos :)

Splendid, Scout!
Generally I am not a great fan of photography in BRC. I kind'a feel that having photos to look at all year sort'a makes that precious one week a little less unique. But when I'm 95 I will want these memory-boosters.

Really enjoyed your camp, Elliot. I plan on dropping by again. Hopefully, I can get a break from wrenching on brc vehicles long enough to lend a wrenching arm with you!

Did you make it to Ventura this weekend for the kinetic race? Tiahaar was there, and I really wish I could have been there, but I was away for work.

I really love this Idea!!

I am playing Piano by myself.
When will you be there on BM?

Greetings right back to you Scott/Thomas, and welcome to ePlaya. At first I thought you live in Australia, but the zip code tipped me off, and I see you are near Paso Robles, California.
You have a lot going for you -- you tend to capitalize Nouns, at least "important" ones, and you read Mark Twain. And you play Piano!
The Piano will fundamentally be available 24/7. That said, I'm a little bit concerned about getting my sleep, specially when I need to get up at 04:30 to go on shift, so I might close it off some nights. Maximum activity will be daily from 1 p.m. to 5 .m., when we repair Bicycles, so that would be the best time for you to inflict your Talent on a captive audience.

So.... Who/what are you really? Scott or Thomas, and what is your native language?

Just to keep the thread from getting stale....
My new neighbor turns out to know his way around a piano. And his verdict is that our 2015 Camp Piano is in perfectly acceptable playable condition. He said it sounded a bit "twangy", which I interpret as a good thing for our purpose. Of course, that means it is not entirely in tune, but it will get much worse before this is over.

Thanks, Digital!
We do indeed want to stay in our "regular" spot on 5:00 -- where we have been the last three years. At the same time we are considering upgrading to official Theme Camp status, which could lead to a relocation. This is being discussed among ourselves almost daily by e-mail and telephone. Right now, for example, we are concocting the formal LNT Plan we would need for a Theme Camp application.

Without Theme Camp placement, the possibility exists that we could show up at our "usual spot" and find it already taken.

So we are, and will be, working on this, and hope/intend/expect/plan to be somewhere along 5:00, and on the same side of the street as before.
If so should happen that Placement "hides" us somewhere entirely different, we always have the option of declining/cancelling, and finding our own location as before. But my past experience with the Placement Team has been Very Good Indeed.

Blah, blah, blah... :D

Why do so many inner tubes fail on the playa? There can't be that many pokey things to cause punctures. Are these coming from protruding spokes or burrs around the spoke nipples? If so I will put a double layer of rim tape on my 3 wheeler (due to arrive next week) before I bring it out.
