Project Idea: Selfie Junction

Our smartphones are the modern day mirrors. We see ourselves through Selfies, and re-take photos until we have a version of our self that we want to upload to the world. Here's an idea to build a gigantic smart phone where participants can pose inside the screen. Jungle-gym style bars run up and down the phone so we can climb on top of it or hang off the sides.

Realistically, i'm not going to build this... so feel free to run with this idea, or comment on what this could be, or just do what u do.

I tried to do this at bm this year. No not the jungle gym aspect but the selfie. I thought it would be a great idea to take selfies with all the great art in the background.

But...I use a disposable out there so I had no idea how these would turn out until i took the cameras in for development.

Yeah, I have a bunch of pic of my face with not much art in the background...

I still like the idea but a camera where you can see it on playa might work better. Unless you want a bunch of pics of just your face

I had a similar idea, but make a giant fake television and have it in front of our camp. So we could all sit in our chair with our drinks and have passersby perform for us on the TV. Make a giant remote control etc.

Did something like this at my camp this year, except our camp were the performers. Little box with some battery-lights to light up at night, and we'd set up a few folding chairs on the other side. I basically just sat in the box with my megaphone and ranted, honestly, but it was good clean fun.

It's probably worth mentioning that it's only a selfie if you're taking the picture yourself (a selfie is a self-portrait). Building something so big that someone else has to take the picture is kind of an anti-selfie junction

Overall though, I'm a big fan of photo frame installations. You build something fun and then people interact and participate to create their own unique pieces of art.

If a big-ass mirror was required, that makes it no more a selfie junction than any other piece of art on the playa. Well, less so since you could always stand out in front of any other art and take the selfie without needing to use a mirror.

What might be fun is a line of smaller (maybe 1-2') frames on stands, all colorful and arty and pretty and stuff, that people could walk up to and use to take their selfies. Sort of a physical manifestation of the prefab frames found in photo apps.

Another option, and something I've been tinkering around with on my own photo frame project that I'll get to at some point (my idea's a steampunk/mechanical contraption), is to design and build some kind of tripod or camera base. 35mm cameras and many point and shoot cameras use that standard screw system, and there are a few 'universal mounts' that fit multiple makes/models of smartphone and lets them use the standard screws. Most cameras and phones have a self-timer, so if you could sort out some kind of ruggedized tripod setup that could still be used for self-portraits.
