Bunny MaMa needs help on a vechile making.
Hello I have went to burning man last year. I had a bike. On which I found not using the last half due to it hurting to much to use. Losing energy to get places. While I worry where my bike is and worrying about if some one would take it. So I want to get a vechile so I can see more burning man next year. So I'm planning on having a vechile made. Last year I saw a simple cow vechile for one or two people. It was a ride on cow with a simple motor with a Vail Turner like the bunny slippers. But I'm looking to make something like it. The camp who had the cow was like near the bathrooms near k and 7:00. But yeah I want to make a bunny one like that with a crazy bunny face while I use the ears to turn the car. On which turns the head. The bunny is going to looks like it is flying. But I would only use it during the day only. I need help for making this work. Motor is a big part. Then framing type. I just need advice. And guidance. Would love this to be cheap as possible. Also I have a concern on how to make the motor run all the days I use it.

Before you start a project like this, be sure you can get it registered with the DMV. It must be very mutated and provide a benefit to the community--not just an easy ride for you. If you can carry passengers, it would be a big plus and make it light up VERY funky at night so you can get a night time permit.
Most important, your vechile should be fun!

Re: Bunny MaMa needs help on a vechile making.
I was planning on it. I was also planning on bring a friend who loves going on adventures. So we would be using it to get around to on side to the other. I'm planning the rabbit cause I'm a bunny mama and also the crazy bunny look would be a plus as a art.I'm probably going to use surf board foam to carve the face. Or some type of foam to carve. I've been read the mutant vechile requirements. An I believe it should work.
I usually dress in a bunny outfit everyday at burning man. So I thought it would be cute/ funny to see a bunny to ride another bunny that's crazy. But if I got enough money and electrical work to do lights for night I would. But for now I'll do the day time still. So I can go around burning man with my friend. Was thinking on going to slave auction and give them a day ride on it as my bet. But anyways. I'm not good at motor stuff so I am stumped on how to do a motor with a frame to support 2-4 people on it. I want the front legs out like it's flying. Where someone can sit on.

Make sure you read the definition of Mutant Vehicle per DMV. Simply putting bunny ears and a smile on a car/cart for you and your friend to cruise the playa will not get you a permit. Make sure you read the page in its entirety before investing in an art car.BunnyMaMa wrote:So I can go around burning man with my friend.

There are many more applications than permits given. Make sure your idea is well thought out prior to the application period.

You can start by finding a regional or group in your area.
Make connections and see who might be able to help you locally.

I don't what to say about the benefit community part. Cause I've seen that cow last year idk how he got the okay. What the single per vechile. Like the bunnies slippers and I've been told there was reclining monitored chairs at burning man. And the cup cake vehicle.digital wrote:Make sure you read the definition of Mutant Vehicle per DMV. Maybe they had a staff permit? Maybe they had a disabled person permit? I don't know. All you say is 'that cow I saw had it' and this doesn't say much. There are many possible scenarios. Did you happen to notice which sticker it had on the bumper?
I hope this doesn't sound harsh but if anyone could add some foam to a car/cart for them and a friend to cruise the playa it would be a mess and legit MVs wouldn't make it given the limited number of permits available.

Re: Bunny MaMa needs help on a vechile making.
There are a lot of things that go into an MV being approved, but "I want to make it easier for me to get around" is a sure-fire way to not get approval. We can't tell you how or why "the cow" you saw had a permit, but someone at DMV thought that they added something to the event (much like the cupcakes, the torpedoes cars, the zeppelin, frankly all the single or dual seaters must do).
It has become a lot harder in recent years to get MV permits for smaller vehicles, just because there are people who want to abuse the system for their own convenience (not saying the OP is). There has to be a pretty solid "community value", but the rub is that there isn't anything that will tell you what that value is. Your best option is to design the vehicle you want (creativity is key), and that you think will pass muster, and then start work on it & submit your paperwork when that window opens. Worst that can happen is they say "no", and then you revise your plans for the following year to try to include more of whatever they say didn't pass muster.

The disable part I can see me going though. Which is my wanting last year. Cause a month before i came to burning man. July 10th was my surgery. I have a non cure able tumor from birth called fiberious dysplasia in my femur. It grew 10 cm long. Now I have a bar in my hip. To my luck I tweaked it the last two days of the burn. I woke myself up and couldn't walk well the whole day. I also had to deal with the line on the 24th I stood in the line from when it was a spiral then a straight line. Which we got out at like 2 in the morning on the 25 my body ached. I had a few people understand my situation. One lady offered her knee for me to sit on. I thank those people. But yeah I still have problems with my hip? I am currently on disability with dshs. Which is how I got my low income last year.
Oh to add to anwser about the cow. I did not catch any stickers on it. I saw it. It was like a body of a cow small for a single to two people. With a bell on it.
I hope I don't sound like I'm arguing. I'm just confused. But as to add with the bunny vehichle the crazy bunny. Would go with the carnival theme.idk I had that as a quick possibility. Maybe I'll figure something else out. I just really love bunnys I got two of my own. An at burning man. I was called bunny mama. Cause my love for bunnys. I had stuff bunnys on my bike a bunny hang on my side. With bunny ears.
But I'll figure something out.

Oh this a little off topic to the vehicle. But um as a disable was there anything I could have done in that line at the ticket box last year. An is there anything I should be aware I could do this coming year?

Re: Bunny MaMa needs help on a vechile making.
You register for a disabled permit the same time as a mutant vehicle would.
Then you get an invite letter.
Then you go to DMV on playa and get your sticker.
If you have a disabled plate on your car, you can drive that.

Re: Bunny MaMa needs help on a vechile making.
Here's the deal with Mutant Vehicles:
The smaller they are, the more impressive and magic they need to be, the more they need to enhance other people's experience. They should make passers-by go "Oh wow that's so amazing, I'm glad I saw that, that's what makes Burning Man great!". The intent shouldn't be simply personal transportation.
As for how to go about building a frame and motor etc., well... Burning Man is intended as a pedestrian and bicycle city. You'll need some skills to create a vehicle awesome enough to pass as mobile art in Black Rock City. It's a lot of work and engineering.
There is such a thing as a disabled permit, allowing you to drive a non-mutated powered vehicle. That could be something to look into. Building a mutant vehicle is a big project, and there's instruction book, you generally need to be a hands-on mechanic and fabricator to pull it off.

Re: Bunny MaMa needs help on a vechile making.
It is very much appreciated by the DMV, that if you have a disable permit on your vehicle, that you could spend time mutating it the best you can. I have seen some of these HP/MV's done on golf carts that were spectacular. While permitted as a disabled vehicle, that person shows some wonderful Burning Man creativity.
Keep in mind that so many mutant vehicles started out as creative sparks that came to life---without Burning Man in mind. I hate to say that my own MV came to life 5 years before Burning Man did. Being able to drive it on the playa was only an added bonus for me.

Bunny MaMa good for you! You are starting on a big adventure!
Here are some ideas -
Subscribe, read archives and see if some of these email mailing lists are helpful to you
https://lists.burningman.com/mailman/listinfo
As Lucky suggests, many of the burning man regionals, like maybe one near you, may have potential collaborators or advisors, or may even be selling an MV they grew out of.
Some cities have "maker spaces" with the tools and potential collaborators for a project like yours!
Make the acquaintance of the Department of Mobility, a camp on the center camp ring. They know things.
I would say convince yourself you will make or obtain an awesome flying magic carpet, but have several backup plans, as you know the playa is a harsh mistress.
Enjoy!

Re: Bunny MaMa needs help on a vechile making.
If you have state issued disabled sticker/ plate for your vehicle in the real world, that is valid at Burning Man (you still need to register it with the BRC DMV though). I believe that is the only way to get the disabled sticker for BRC, but it can be invaluable in giving you the ability to see the city. Like Sham said, mutating that vehicle makes it more "a part" of Burning Man, but it's not required.BunnyMaMa wrote:The disable part I can see me going though.

Bunny Mama,
So, the first thing I would suggest to you (or ANYONE) when you have a question about the DMV and the licensing of Mutant Vehicles or Disabled Person's Vehicles is to...
Email the DMV!
[email protected]
Yes, we actually answer our emails (and usually do so sooner than we catch eplaya posts about MVs) and try to do so with a fairly quick turnaround.
Now, as to your question. From the thread, it sounds like the best option for you is to apply for a Disabled Person's Vehicle permit. There is no decoration REQUIREMENT for DPVs (although any and all decoration and mutation is always appreciated) and the core requirement is that you have a Government issued Disabled Parking Permit.
The information on applying for DPVs is here: http://burningman.org/event/art-perform ... ehicles/2/
As for earlier questions regarding the requirements for a Mutant Vehicle....yes, we do license small vehicles (1-2 person) IF they are well-mutated and meet or exceed all of the criteria for an MV. They need to be more than just a base vehicle with decoration (ie, golf cart covered in fur and blinky lights...or just having animal ears added)... and, ideally, they have a bit of what we call 'Wow' factor, ie, if you were a burner, walking across the playa, and you turned and saw the vehicle, would you say "Wow....look at that!", if so, then the MV creator would be on the right track.
Also, as noted, there are a number of vehicles that are driven at the event that are NOT Mutant Vehicles. Disabled Person's Vehicles, Art Support Vehicles, Staff Vehicles...none of which are required to meet the same level of mutation as Mutant Vehicles are. If you ever have a question about a particular vehicle, you can look for the vehicles license tag on the lower left corner of the rear of the vehicle and check the license number. If it starts with "M15-" then it was licensed at a mutant vehicle...if it starts with "D15-", then it's a DPV and anything other would likely be staff or Art Support (and if it has no license at all AND it's not Law Enforcement, then it probably shouldn't be driving at all.
Again, if you have any questions or need any clarification on any of the above, please email us at [email protected]
Sincerely,
-Chef Juke for the DMV Hotties
