Looking for an amazing camp for my 70 year old mother/aunts

Post by zoenightingale » Fri Feb 20, 2015 9:44 am

Hi!

I'm a 5 time burner, and for the first time my dream of bringing my amazing gaggle of female family members to burning man is happening. I am looking to join forces with a bad ass camp so I can show my family what i've been yelling about all these years. We are specifically looking to help build if possible, or help with group projects, food, cook dinner just generally be part of the community of a larger camp.

We would have one RV a tent and bring a 8 person golf cart (my mom can't bike she has titanium hips!) that we'd be happy to help use get ice, coffees, anything the camp may need.

We are great cooks, great charades players, and great team players and my family wants to really get involved in the building and giving back part of the burn.

I'm looking for an awesome tight knit camp with great shade structures, outdoor places to hang shower bags and communal dinner we can help prepare.

I'm also looking for a gas powered 6 to 8 person golf cart to buy as my mother has titanium hips and even though she's in rock star shape i want to make it comfortable for her.

Thanks for your help!

Golf carts commonly appear on Craigslist. Golf cart mechanics would be good to know. Then you need a trailer. As a veteran burner sure you are up on all the mutant vehicle/disabled vehicle details and deadlines. I'm very anti-Segway, but a company out of LA was renting them for delivery on playa last year. There are also experts on ePlaya on battery assisted pedal tricycles. Regionals are a good place to look for camps.

Hi ZoeNightingale! I love it that you're bringing your family. You probably know this, but you'll wanna get the disabled license done a few months before the Burn.

I'm not sure what camp to recommend, but there are some posting here in 2015 Theme Camps already, and there will be more soon.

I'm so happy to have found this post!

My 70 year old mother is also coming. I am planning an RV for her as well. We will be around 7pm/G. It would be great for the moms to perhaps meet up! I'll write you separately, and for others with moms or elderly coming, please feel free to reply here and/or message me privately.

I haven't found a good transportation option. I was thinking perhaps an electric bike / cruiser with the two extra wheels in back. I wasn't aware that the golf cart was an option b/c I thought it would have to be fully a mutant vehicle.

I'd be very interested to hear more about what people are doing for old or less mobile / less bike-friendly people on the play. For example my mom has osteoporosis so if she did fall while biking or even go over a ton of huge ruts I'd be concerned.

Be sure and check out mobility camp for suggestions and the artery for art tours in a bus. I know it sounds hookey but for some it's the only way to see the art.

Thanks, Ratty! Mobility Camp I'm just checking out - it's amazing. I'll message you separately with a couple questions.

Re: the Artery, cool! I never knew about that. I found a topic on it: http://blog.burningman.com/2014/08/part ... art-tours/ . I will definitely be there with my mom! I'll try to catch Thursday's.

I'm giving this thread a nudge over to the Camps, Art, & Activities board, since that's a better fit for a thread about finding a camp.

Golf cart is only an option if the person has a handicapped license from Burning Man. I believe there's still time to apply for that, check the participation forms on your burner profiles account.

As for adding extra wheels, please remember that e-bikes are only permitted so long as they meet the state of Nevada's definition for an eBike (and extra wheels may change whether it meets NV requirements). There's a link to that in the mutant vehicle resources on the main site.

Good luck!

Who the fuck is that calling me elderly.

I am 71 and I can promise you that from the chair that I sit with my titanium hip -- That I am definitely not elderly.

Hi ladies!

My (very spry and fun) 82 year old mother is coming to Burning Man for 4 days this year. We already have a place to camp, but it might be fun to have a get-together for older ladies at burning man. Whadd'ya think?
