Math Chemistry and Physics! Oh my!
Hello,
So I am actually going to make it out to the playa this year! I am currently in school for chemical engineering and TTITD falls right between the end of an internship and before fall quarter... meant to be really.
So I did a quick search and didn't find much but I am hoping you fine people can direct me.
Is there any science, engineering, technology and or mathematics themed camps or events? Obviously there will be engineering ABOUND with all these huge structures. Science and math are all over the place anyways, but specifically any intentionally themed events structures or camps?
Bring on the snark if you must. Thanks!
Here's a rad example.

That would be a hoot.
Though I have met some pretty brainy folks on the Playa, most uber-geeks tend to also unplug. Besides, PBR softball is for everyone.
There have been TEDx events, but for the most part they were of the social sciences types.

You might consider starting something yourself, once your studies permit that type of effort.

There is Math Camp. I found a listing in the theme camp archive but the website link is outdated. I met someone from Math Camp last year. She was super fun!
I am going to be in my second week of Precalc Algebra during the burn, and though I know I will probably not get a lick of homework done, I am going to seek this math camp and try!

Focused more towards space but these guys are very intelligent with science backgrounds, which include physics, math and chem.
There is also BWB with a bunch of professional engineer doctor types but that might be a harder group to break into.

When I go to BRC the last goddamm thing I want is anything to do with my everyday job (even though I like my job).

Re: Token:
Ooh man, I've been rolling that idea around in my head. So like, I spend all my time grinding through equations and it takes it toll... But I thought about what really excites me and if I could do anything I wanted it would be all the parts I like at bman plus all the parts I like about science! I mean, I also love other things like dancing, and building and communicating/connecting on a real level. But I thought about how rad it would be to climb around on life sized mathematic puzzles ( I really think this must have been done a few times and I haven't seen em ) or interact with physical representations of chemisty and physic concepts...coooooool.
I'll check out ted @ bman...I do think this may be a classic, "if you don't see it out there, build it scenario" as well.
Re: danibel
Oooh mathcamp! And hell yeah precalc. Algebra can be a tricky one.

Man, that is the general consensus among my buddies, ha. I don't know how to have fun! Lol, I mean. I was a professional dancer and ran an art gallery before....but I still danced and art-ed all over the place out on the playa. How does one...relax?
I can't be the only one though, maybe the answers to my questions lie in the PEOPLE. I could work on finding people who enjoy nerding out and discussing science topics...while out in a desert playa land. ha. Who knows. Honestly its all up in the air once I get out there.

The way to go is social media and there might be a few people from Seatown, Baytown and elsewhere who meet your interests, and their camps may have a concentration of like minds.

I camped next to a bunch of engineers from SpaceX my first year but had no idea until it came up in a conversation.
There's certainly a lot of chemicals being consumed on the playa so maybe your chem-e skills can be put to use on a project, haha.

Did you guys build that musical Tesla coil last year on 5:00? Most amazing thing I've ever seen.

Thank you!! I've had a hell-of-a-time finding information about it. By far the best thing I've seen out there.torrey.smith wrote:Negative. That was the Coup de Foudre by Matt Faulkner.Did you guys build that musical Tesla coil last year on 5:00? Most amazing thing I've ever seen.

We camped accross the street from math camp last year, a great group to hang out with. They gave talks on lots of difference subjects and had large crowds in attendance. They also had a great bar.

Check out the Phage, they hosted the Coup de Foudre, the MicroZoo (with live tardigrades, protozoans, etc. to look at), a "meet a scientist" mingle, and a lot more. Here's a good rundown from last year: http://quantumfrontiers.com/2014/10/15/ ... -say-what/

When he puts out his lamp, he sends the flower, or the star, to sleep.
That is a beautiful occupation.

Wow!! Sextant camp, that zipline, and those tesla towers look great. I would definitely attempt that zipline.
I wonder if the Coup De Foudre tesla project will be there this year? I'd love to see that too.
And yes!!! The Phange!!! My first year I accidentally stumbled into their camp and they were so kind and welcoming. I wasn't even drunk or inebriated, just confused, lost and slightly overwhelmed. They let me hang out and go on top of their dome, check out the view. It was really nice. I kinda thought they may be into Science, given the name and all. Rad. Totally checking them out again.
I am reading this blog now ( while writing up a lab report...appropriate ) and just getting so excited. Thanks for the link!
Okay... obviously I'm super stoked.

Re: Math Chemistry and Physics! Oh my!
The general rule of thumb is that if you aren't able to find or connect with a camp that matches you're interests... start your own! Even if it turns out later that there's another, similar themed camp, your own unique brand of awesomeness will result in something different and special in its own right. Look at all the bars on the playa... unique and special snowflakes, every single one
Good luck in finding or building what you're looking for!
