Ridesharing safety?

When offering rideshares, how do you keep yourself from being robbed, carjacked, or hurt? You not only have to worry about burners but locals posing as burners, perhaps with a stolen or counterfeit ticket. All of this seems so shady. I've never done this before and I feel the sudden desire to own a gun.

Check out Air Playa Info, Reno Airport.
If you need to get to the playa, get to Air Playa Info at Reno Airport.

Advice has always included something along the lines of "be comfortable with your ride".
Google eplaya and rideshare for other tale and advice.
