Looking for original First Timer's Guide

Post by Smashy_McSpoodle » Wed Jan 14, 2015 9:36 am

The Burning Man website has been redone and one thing they changed is the format of the First Timer's Guide. All the topics are now hidden beneath seemingly endless links and multiple pages to search through.

Does anyone have a copy of the old one? It used to be on one page and in point form as I remember. Simple stuff.

I have three friends who are considering coming for the first time but I think the new format will just be confusing and they won't find the info the don't realize they need.

Thanks

Nevermind, I was smart and used the Wayback Machine! I found it:

I have not decided yet which version of the website seems easier for me to navigate, but I'm pretty sure you deserve a Thank You! for posting this link. I had no idea there was such a thing as this "way back"... uh... thingie. And welcome to ePlaya!

The "First Timers Guide" was not/is not printable, AFAIK.
On the First Timers Guide (webpage) there is a link to the SURVIVAL GUIDE, which has an option to save as a PDF file.

From here:
http://burningman.org/event/preparation ... ers-guide/
click on the Survival Guide link and you can read/download as needed

There's no such thing as unprintable.
Except for photos of unjonharley.

Just seeing this now - the First Timer's Guide has been intended as an online resource (and not a printed hardcopy) guide for a number of years. Things change over time, which would mean they'd contain some outdated info. Your newbie friends/campmates would be best served by you passing them the link so they can practice their own radical self reliance by reading through it.

The Survival Guide, on the other hand, is meant as either an electronic or printed resource The 2015 edition will not likely be posted until early summer. In the meantime, check out the one from last year - there's also a downloadable PDF that can be printed or loaded onto tablets or devices for handy reference.

It' not that hard:
Get a pare of USGI sun, wind and dust goggles; clear lens and shaded,
keep the around you neck at all times.

Use a bandana (wet) when the dust rolls in. the wet bandana will keep
the dust from getting past it, and trap it outside.

Just keep in mind that the Playa is a corrosive base. I will eat your skin,
destroy your folding chairs and bikes.

If you are bringing a folding chair or a bike, you can stop this corrosion.

Every steel bolt, rivet or screw must be covered in clear nail polish; this
will mitigate the corrosive dust from destroying your stuff; even in between
the rivet and the chair

For you skin do not leave skin open. Even shoes with socks, the dust will
collect there. And your hands need content maintenance. Driving home
with hands and feet that that are cracked and bleeding is no fun at all.

The big issue is your eyes... don't by tactical goggles or mountain goggles,
as they both let in dust. If you get dust in your eyes consider yourself
almost blind. Get the USGI goggles for $12 15 dollars and you'll be fine.
