Truck and trailer from the southeast-Florida

Postby Navi_Keef » Wed Jun 03, 2015 6:30 am

Aloha!

I live in Orlando and plan on renting a pickup truck to pull my trailer. I'm offering to transport a bike and a bin for people who need things transported. We will be leaving Orlando August 26th arriving at the playa that Sunday the 30th. Reservations are due July 17th, and you will need to bring your 30 gallon bin and bike sometime between August 20th-23rd unless some other time is set up.

We also have an additional seat in the truck if anyone needs a ride!

[mod edit: arrival date updated]

I don't know what calendar you're looking at, but the last Sunday in August is the 30th.

Check and see if the rental place, or the insurance co, allows trailer towing with their pickups (likely not!) and if they even have a hitch. Then there's trailer brake controller for the truck to check into also.
It's possible to set this up but make sure the logistics are covered.

I think I know what I am doing. Trailer does not have trailer brakes, please do not attempt to offer advice as I do not need it here.

This is correct, I was looking at Saturday's row thinking it was Sunday for some reason

Orlando to Black Rock City is almost 3,000 miles. Even as a seasoned cross-country truck driver, I would not dream of trying to drive so far in such a short time.
Especially when we need to be well rested on arrival, so we can "get our money's worth" at the Event, plus that we will surely not get enough sleep during the Event.

Are you planning to deflate your trailer tires when you reach elevation?

You really should do that to minimize risk of tire blow-out.

You absolutely must pack grease in you trailer axle bearings on a trip as long as that one.

Make sure all you lights on the trailer work and that nothing is obstructing the license plate. They get very nit-picky about that on the route to BM and will give you a ticket.

What if someone packs a bunch of drugs in that bin and you get nabbed crossing boarders and go to federal "pound me in the ass" prison?

my thread was posted this morning and already has over 10 replies

every thread posted in this section for the past 3 days has less than 5 replies

is there an obvious reason why people are coming in here to talk shit and troll?.....

Sorry, we don't sweep replies just because you don't like the tone of them. While we do have some sections of the board that are 'working' (most notably, ticketing) and off topic banter is periodically removed, this board is not one of them. If you post a public listing, you're bound to get responses. That includes questions and in many cases, unsolicited advice - that's just how communities and message boards work. I don't read the first couple posts as trolling at all - your original post had a day and date that didn't match, asking helps to get the right info posted to the thread (as soon as I finish this post I'll update your original post with the right date). The second response had unsolicited advice about checking on the rental (it's good advice btw, people run into that one all the time). From there the snark and trolling was instigated by your snippy response (where you could have just said thanks, but I've got it covered you threw out some attitude and then uttered what are often considered to be famous last words "please do not attempt to offer advice as I do not need it here." Going back to what I said before about unsolicited advice being a part of how communities and message boards work, statements like that usually just serve as an invitation for people to offer more unsolicited advice.

The unsolicited advice I'm offering is to not treat people's questions or unsolicited advice as some kind of hostile act, and don't let posts get to you. In some cases (like where you got the date wrong) it can be helpful and beneficial, and at worst it's unneeded info that can be ignored. Hostile or argumentative responses are less helpful than you think.

why is the date being wrong even being brought up here? there was nothing wrong with that post nor was i hostile in admitting that i got the date wrong.

to offer advice is to imply that you know what I am doing. in which case nobody here does.

1. my trailer is a single axle open utility trailer which probably weighs about 700lbs so there is no need for a brake controller
2. my rental truck is not through your average rental place and i think i am smart enough to know that i need insurance, who is dumb enough to drive without insurance?

i started this thread for a purpose of finding people to assist with getting their stuff to playa. i did not start this thread to have all these "veteran" burners come and preach and make a checklist of all of my bases to imply that i dont know what i am doing. i see that as a threadjack and yes i do find it offensive because it takes away from what i am doing here.

when i requested to stop, it continued just because i didnt say please and thank you and apparently that makes it hostile and snippy?...I said it because i was being up front and honest.

you can probably just delete this whole thread now or set it up as an example how to get trolled, whatever you want to do. chances are nothing is going to stem from this after the threadjacking anyway and probably have better chances on facebook anyhow.

You do seem pretty bright. I apologize for not assuming you knew that most truck rental companies' insurance policies don't permit trailer towing. But hey, if the truck has no hitch, you could always attach the trailer with suction cups.

oops sorry more unsolicited advice

let me be more specific cap'n

im using relay rides in which the truck i am renting is owned by a private party, in which he has posted a picture showing me that he has a hitch and trailer wiring, even for electric brakes if i had them! 8)

This is as good of a place to post a link to our "Overview on Posting" for the ePlaya, which contains the helpful message:
NOTE: Be prepared for public scrutiny and criticism of your posts & threads, it comes part and parcel with posting on public message boards.

Nobody "owns" a thread on ePlaya, and unless a response violates the ToS or Community Guidelines it won't be removed.

People get asked to leave camps all the time - and a lot of the time it happens on-playa, which is a lot worse than discovering a camping situation won't work almost 3 months out. I don't know (nor do I need to know, nor does the board) the internal workings of what happened, but it's a good reminder to posters in general that, unlike most of The Internet, the vast majority of the posters on this board have just one or two degrees of separation, and how you interact with other people on here will very much color opinions of you in real life - even if only part of your personality is captured here.

Might I gently suggest that you write your tutorial, read it a few times, and then hit the delete key. I find doing the same thing helps me immensely when I'm upset, but instead of increasing the drama I step back from it, and by stepping back you give people a chance to see a different side of you. Just think of ePlaya like a house party, and all these names not as "anonymous" but as people you just haven't been introduced to yet. That introduction happens on-playa at the Meet & Greet, for regular posters and lurkers alike.
