"place inline" button for file attachments missing
Experiencing the issue on mobile and desktop browsers. I am able to attach files to a post but cannot place them in the post to be visible.

IIRC, Trilo said the storage for those photos on our server is full. And, until tech can get more storage, or old photos are deleted, there is no room so the button won't work.
He suggested hosting a photo somewhere and linking, and that work, but is extra steps.

So it’s like how it was back in the days when we all had live journal and had to host photos on some janky ad infested website..

Re: "place inline" button for file attachments missing
It's even worse than that. back then we had free photo hosting and every one know how to do it. Now its a pain in the ass to post pictures on Eplaya and it's making it fucking suck around here.
Posting pictures is fun. It allows for one liners and gags and inside jokes. It makes explaining things way easier and how am I supposed to get excited about someone's fancy shmancy art fundraiser if I have to click a link and navigate a damn wordpress website just to see their 3D rendering?
We talk about how Eplaya is in decline and its our duty to BRC to snarkily disseminate Correct Burner Protocols...
What's it going to take to get some damn photos around here? Sounds like the issue is that we've run out of storage. Can we get more? What if we did a little Eplaya fundraiser thingy kinda like Wikipedia does. Anonymous contributions to buy some more storage so I can start posting dumb pictures again.
I'd pitch in. Would you?

Well, instead of a fundraiser, maybe you can organize people to go in and delete old photos they have posted here? IIRC, Trilo said that'd work?

Re: "place inline" button for file attachments missing
I agree with your sentiments tRod. The notion that a lot of the fun, and therefore what may also have kept many seasoned veterans actively engaged was the immediacy of easily posting pictures in a fun and timely manner. It wouldn't surprise me if several of our long-term eplayans have left because they grew tired of the workarounds. Thankfully, Trilo was able to fix the video embed linking issue, so that does work again now.
Funny you should bring it up just now. I spent well over an hour, probably over two really, trying to effectively get an image to load last night. Attachments didn't work for me at all, so I messed with Imgur trying to get that to work as a host, but it kept insisting on placing its logo and live app button on the border of the image when using a smartphone, which is what I use most of the time, and I cringed at that result. I did finally find something called Imgbox that seemed work, but who knows how long that will last, and you do have to jump through their hoops.
You have likely already read this, but Trilo wrote at length about the issue regarding the attachments problem and eplaya's server being full over in 'The Bar' thread, especially on page 27.
If I understand correctly, one concern was that deleting previous attachments would wreck content, so the effort would need to be surgical, and therefore, I'm guessing, probably wouldn't provide much substantial long-term relief before it fills up again.
I have no idea if just buying an additional hard drive would solve the problem. The way I see it, drive space is extremely affordable, but it likely is never that simple, and may be more of matter of getting the job done, and other factors that I am unaware of.
If it makes a difference, I'd pitch in a few bucks, but that seems like a bit of an odd thing to have to do.

I wonder how accurate the "full" host thing is?burner von braun wrote: ↑Tue Jun 28, 2022 3:43 amI agree with your sentiments tRod. Might be worth an experiment, where a person goes in and deletes one or more of their own photos, and then immediately posts a new one? Does it work that way, where the counter will go down or space will free up as soon as the delete happens?

Re: "place inline" button for file attachments missing
I should hang out in the bar more.. I’m missing all the important news!
I wonder if it could be as simple as buying a hard drive… I would think it’s server space that is the issue, but I don’t know much about how websites work. Is it possible to store content on a hard drive that’s accessible via a website? Or is it like when iCloud or google tells me I need to upgrade my storage plan?
If I had the know-how I’d just volunteer to take care of it myself.. if it’s still an issue by September I might have some have to time to learn how to manage website content hosting.. but I’m pretty busy until then *wink*

Is the org is throwing their support to hive, which I find as easily navigable as using walworld, and az-shit “fooled ya!” “filters” to still show me the thousand of things I don’t want to buy until I just give up looking? Photos were great. I miss photoshopping jokes, and showing gear and projects. I’ve tried three free apps to do photos and they all sucked. It’s hours of effort each time, I’ve forfeited personal information to try, for nothing usable.

Re: "place inline" button for file attachments missing
Maybe easier to grasp than Twitter, it seems this would be low lying fruit for Elon to fix. What are his feelings on EDM? Could whoever is on the board get Paris Hilton to ask him for us, the community? Yes, deleting photos and attachments frees up space. If only all the old photos I was deleting were of confederate statues... So, who's delivering the petition to fix this to First Camp?

Re: "place inline" button for file attachments missing
How much space can photos possibly take up? Even amounts as much as 100GB/mo are usually quite affordable on web hosts, especially for a site this big, and it's often the bandwidth that's the issue. The images could even be limited to like 300kB or something, which would work for most things. 1GB more space would permit over 3000 photos.

Re: "place inline" button for file attachments missing
It's not a new issue, the site hit it's attachment capacity several months back, and can not accept additional file attachments (and does not handle requests as expected). The tech team has so far been unwilling or unable to approve increasing our capacity. In their defense, like a lot of other Burning Man departments affected by furloughs and staffing issues over the course of the pandemic, they've had their hands full.
As has been the recommended practice the whole time, I suggest uploading your image to a server or hosting site of your choice, and then use the site's IMG tag and paste in the URL of the image's address. I've had an account on tumblr that has worked well enough for me for the last several years, but there are many different places that do many kinds of hosting, ranging from free to paid sites.
Yes, commercial user data and content mining operations make it super easy to upload pics... but it's because you and your content are the product they sell to advertisers, so they make it easy for you to give them more product to sell.

Re: "place inline" button for file attachments missing
I'm very happy to report that somebody on the tech team was able to make the time needed and do the work necessary so our server space could be increased. This means that attaching image files (and placing images inline in a post) should be working again.
