Aw damn, you beat me to it.
One of these brain trusts was brilliant enough to have posted not a link to their harvest site but the link to the harvest software code (back a few pages).
What that tells me is they're using the "email" function and trying to break into the server's email database to harvest addresses. When you look at the volume of these boggarts, it's kind of scary.

When this particular account shows up on the eplaya active list it's not long before another sock seems to show up. It's another potential master account to be on the lookout for.

It's not so much his link to anti-spyware tools and 0 post count, it's his constant lurking followed by the rapid appearance of sock accounts not long after. Now I could be wrong about this...but I've seen enough of a pattern that I feel confident speaking up about it. There's a handful of similar accounts, 204-synaix, Diplom, and Aponomarenko that I suspect are master accounts.

This... is the question... which was brought up a month ago...
Does it even make a difference? Does anyone really give a damn?
So what if all these sock accounts pop up. So what if the board is overrun in address-harvesters and .ru (and .ua, etc.) accounts.
Is anything being done, or is it all just a futile waste of time?
Does it matter we find and report these? Or are we doing this for no good reason? Sometimes it feels like I'm screaming into an empty, soundproof room...
Sorry to sound so negative, but I kinda wonder - especially with these "master accounts", and the ongoing patterns and obvious problems.

This has become an interesting thread.
Lots of good reporting here.
But to what avail?
It`s not really "any of my business", but it is still
a little agitating to see the blatant commercial goings on, and not
having any power to take tangible steps to correct what appears to be a software issue. And with no-one actively erasing the faulty accounts, it does appear that we are being deluged with "attacks", when in reality it
is just business on the internet as usual. Now if someone were to be actively profiting from the BM LLC by using these tactics...rest assured, that action would have been taken(software and legal)...faster than stink evaporates from JOTS. But we are , after all, just free users of a bbs message board, so who gives a shit if we are inconvenienced a little with piss-porn adds? After the right chain has been jerked, someone will upgrade filters and add malicious software removal tools, apply masking techniques....etc...
....a little time from a "trusted" techie could no doubt do wonders.
In the mean time, Eplayans will just have to put up with a bit more bulk mail, or if they aren`t using filters, they are probably getting bombed with the shit.....
....should be fun to see what develops ....
a little info....in case you didn`t know already:
ISP Filters Block as Much as 95% of Unsolicited E-mail; Consumers Can Take Additional Steps to Curb the Amount of Spam They Receive
According to a new study released today by the Federal Trade Commission, spammers continue to harvest email addresses from public areas of the Internet, but Internet Service Providers’ anti-spam technologies can block the vast majority of spam sent to these email addresses. The FTC staff report also found that consumers who must post their e-mail addresses on the Internet can prevent them from being harvested by using a technique known as “masking.”
The agency studied three aspects of spam: e-mail address harvesting – the automated collection of e-mail addresses from public areas of the Internet; the effectiveness of spam filtering by ISPs; and the effectiveness of using “masked” e-mail addresses as a technique to prevent the harvesting of e-mail addresses.
To conduct the study, FTC staff created 150 new undercover e-mail accounts – 50 at an ISP that uses no anti-spam filters and 50 each at two different ISPs that use spam filters. They then posted the e-mail addresses on 50 Internet sites, including message boards, blogs, chat rooms, and USENET groups where spammers might go to attempt to harvest the addresses.
The study concluded that spammers continue to harvest e-mail addresses posted on Web sites, but addresses posted in chat rooms, message boards, USENET groups, and blogs were unlikely to be harvested. “Indeed, some chat room operators took proactive measures to prevent the harvesting of e-mail addresses posted by the FTC staff,” the study says.
After a five week trial, e-mail addresses at the unfiltered ISP received a total of 8,885 spam messages. At the end of the same period, email addresses at one of the ISPs that uses filtering technologies received a total of 1,208 spam messages, and email addresses at the second ISP that uses filtering technologies received a total of 422 spam messages. The filter of the first ISP blocked 86.4 percent of the spam, and the filter of the second ISP blocked 95.2 percent of the spam.
The study also tested whether using “masked” e-mail addresses prevents the harvesting
of e-mail addresses and consequently reduces spam. “Masking” addresses involves altering an e-mail address to make it understandable to the recipient but confusing to automated harvesting software. For example, an e-mail address such as [email protected] could be altered to appear as john doe at FTC dot gov. The study found that masking e-mail addresses was very effective in thwarting harvesting. After five weeks, unmasked e-mail addresses had received more than 6,400 pieces of spam, while the masked e-mail addresses had received only one piece of spam.
The study concluded that consumers who must post their e-mail addresses on Web sites can reduce the risk of having their e-mail address harvested – making them a target of spammers – by masking their addresses. It also demonstrated the effectiveness of ISPs’ spam filters.

The FTC works for the consumer to prevent fraudulent, deceptive, and unfair business practices in the marketplace and to provide information to help consumers spot, stop, and avoid them. Copies of the study are available from the FTC’s Web site at http://www.ftc.gov and also from the FTC’s Consumer Response Center, Room 130, 600 Pennsylvania Avenue, N.W., Washington, D.C. 20580. The FTC works for the consumer to prevent fraudulent, deceptive, and unfair business practices in the marketplace and to provide information to help consumers spot, stop, and avoid them. To file a complaint in English or Spanish (bilingual counselors are available to take complaints), or to get free information on any of 150 consumer topics, call toll-free, 1-877-FTC-HELP (1-877-382-4357), or use the complaint form at http://www.ftc.gov. The FTC enters Internet, telemarketing, identity theft, and other fraud-related complaints into Consumer Sentinel, a secure, online database available to hundreds of civil and criminal law enforcement agencies in the U.S. and abroad.

One way to protect yerself from these fucks is to mask your email address
by formulating it in a way that the harvesters don`t understand ie:
eplayaAT burningmanDOT com
The infiltrating program doesn`t recognize it as an addy and won`t collect it.
Unfortunately I don`t believe the Eplaya program will recognize it as a valid email address either....so poot.
Is it possible to modify the program around this?
doubt it can be easily done.
Just spitballing here....
I guess we can take comfort in knowing that hardly anyone is clicking on any of this blatant spam
But I`m thinking the Eplaya needs a condom to guard against this crap.
I haven`t actually counted, but it looks like new accounts signed up are at least 5-1 commercial spam junk
Surely someone`s got some freeware to save the board from this constant raping....???
anyone?
Would I be invoking internet anxiety by breaking the code and claiming
that internet Nazi`s have landed on the Eplaya and are collecting information about us...just like HITLER did???(not exactly but close enough).....?
mein gott in himmel
save us pleas..

LETTER TO THE ADMINS -
Any way we can deal with this Diplom guy? Or is he bypassing the phpBB code to stay up? I mean, as blatant as a repeat TOS violator as he is, why can't you guys ban him?? Or is that disabled in our phpBB version? Curious...

Same with 204-synaix - C'mon, this can't be that hard to get on top of...

I hate me too posts yet I have to second BBS's call for some kind of action regarding the Diplom account. It's a new year, it's time to clean house around here and give the TOS some meaning again.
Emily, can this account be banned? Could someone test the email account provided by suspending the account and making it revalidate the email address? Surely there's something in the admin toolkit that can be used to discourage or downright block this stuff?
