Media Embedding

Post by trilobyte » Thu Mar 17, 2016 3:23 pm

One of the most awesome things we've picked up in the big upgrade is automatic embedding for a whole lot of videos and other media. In the past, we had come up with custom codes that allowed you to embed things like youtube or vimeo clips into your posts using something like this...

Code: Select all

And that mostly worked for people, though of course if you didn't know to use the special bbcode then the post would just have a link and not show the clip. No biggie, but it sure would be nice if the site was able to just detect when a video link had been posted and handle the details automatically. And now it does! All you have to do is paste in the URL of your clip. For example, if you were to paste in this...

Code: Select all
You just see it like this...

The embedder works for more than just vimeo and youtube clips. It also supports stuff like Twitter and Instagram...

The automatic embedder supports over a hundred different media sites, including: ABC News, BBC News, Blab, Bleacher Report videos, Break, CBS News Video, CNBC, CNN, CollegeHumor, Comedy Central, Coub, Dailymotion, Facebook, Flickr, Fox News, Funny or Die, Getty Images, Gfycat, Global News, GoFundMe, Google Drive, Google+, Google Sheets, Hudl, Hulu, HumorTV, IGN, IMDb, Imgur, Indiegogo, Instagram, Internet Archive, İzlesene, Kickstarter, Kiss Video, LiveLeak, Livestream, Medium, Mixcloud, Metacafe, MSNBC, National Geographic Channel, National Geographic Video, NHL VideoCenter, NPR, The New York Times Video, Oddshot, Pastebin, Reddit comment permalink, Scribd, SlideShare, SoundCloud, Spotify, Stitcher, Straw Poll, Streamable, Team Coco, TED Talks, The Atlantic Video, The Onion, TinyPic videos, Tumblr, Twitch, Twitter, Ustream, VBOX7, VEVO, Viagame, Videomega, vidme, Vimeo, Vine, VK, Vocaroo, Vox, The Wall Street Journal Online, Yahoo! Screen, Youku, YouTube, Zippyshare audio files and more.

I think the kickstarter, indiegogo, and gofundme support will come in handy for projects posting fundraisers in the Support A Project board, and the wide range of video and image hosting sites should cover our needs and then some. Enjoy!
