Transportation versus bicycles

Postby Elliot » Thu Aug 11, 2016 1:42 am

To my mind, "transportation" means trucks, cars, buses, airplanes, trains, ships.
And of course, in the Default Word, bicycles. The more the better. Everybody ought to live within bicycle distance of work and stores.

But for Burning Man purposes.... Bloomin' few would even consider traveling to Burning Man on a bicycle.

For Burning Man purposes, bicycles ain't "transportation".

Bicycles are "Playa Gear".

So let's quit lumping bicycle-related threads in with Transportation in the Event Preparation section. There ought to be a Playa Bicycles category. There is a Building Mutant Vehicles category! And most MVs are hauled there on a transportation-truck.

Up the revolution! To the ramparts! Off with their heads! Equal rights for Playa Bicycles! :!:

Boy, Elliot. That rant could be the poster child for decaffinated coffee. Epic!

I'm with Elliot! Free the playa bicycles! No more sufferage! Stop mis-labeling our trusty playa steeds!

And every bike rider>>>>do this now:

Read the sidewall of your tires to find inner tube size (26x2.0, 700x35, etc.)
BUY spares of that tube size.
Carry with you while riding.

The bike repair camps will find you to be terrifically prepared in event of a flat!

Sorry, bikes are not getting their own message board anytime soon. The transportation board is for not only transportation to and from the event, but transportation at the event (which occurs primarily by bicycle).

A lot of transportation at the event occurs by Mutant Vehicle, that's got its own category, but hey, it doesn't have to make sense.
Is there anyone who doesn't just hit "New Posts" or "Active Topics" from the Quick Links menu at the upper left?
I never know or care which sub-category is in. It's all just eplaya.

Yes there are a lot of mutant vehicles, but they do not account for the bulk of transportation at the event. MV's get their own category because, like art installations and theme camps they have their own questionnaire and review process.

Bicycles are a big part of what make the Transportation board what it is, that's not expected to change.

If you say so. But the two forms of travel could not be much more different.

Well, let's say bicycles are Intracity Transportation. Then we ought to have a board for Transportation To And From The Event.

The two concepts are just too dissimilar to belong together.

I've been here ten years and I still struggle to find the bicycle stuff when I go looking for it. I read "Transportation" and my mind sees a Burner Express Bus, and my eyes keep right on going down the page looking for "Bicycles".

As Dan Akroyd would have said on Point/Counterpoint on Saturday Night Live in 1979....
Elliot you ignorant slut.
Bicycles for the playa are closely related to trucks and buses traveling on the highways outside of the event. Most people would expect to look there to read about decorated playa bikes.

Elliot, I'm sorry you have a hard time comprehending the board's descriptions sometimes, and thank you for your feedback. Unfortunately, that still does not mean there will be a separate board for bicycles, intracity transportation, or any other split you're demanding anytime soon.

Honestly, in all my years of "nudging" threads, I can't recall ever having to move a bike thread. They've all been posted in transportation to begin with.

I'd go ahead and nudge this discussion into the dumpster, it's not worth the bytes it written in... It's called nitpicking, don't you have a theme camp to get ready or something?...

Yes, a bicycle IS transportation. That's been it's purpose right from the beginning.

Oh yes.... I have about three months worth of work to get done by the 21st.
But my brain needs occasional breaks. For example, I always take time to solve the crossword in the local newspaper. Relaxes and clears the mind.

And on a similar break, I looked for something bicycle on ePlaya....

Anyhoo....

Trilo, I do not mean to demand anything.

I mean to suggest, in a vigorous and entertaining style, with logical arguments supporting my suggestion.

(You’ve never heard me demand anything, and you don’t want to.) (Example of “entertaining style” – humor.)

You’re in charge, Trilo (and I don't envy you the job of keeping the lid on this potentially fiery kettle, which you do very well), so the decision is indeed yours to make. And that’s agreeable to me – so long as my suggestion and arguments receive due consideration before the decision is made.

Perhaps my perspective can be summed up in this question: What is ePlaya’s form of government?

Presumably, there is a democratic element involved.

Now back to our regularly scheduled Playa Preparations! :D

Governing can best be described as nitwits tooling with halfwits until a few dimwits realize the fuckwits were right and find themselves at Witts End.

Edited to add: that guy in the last picture Jackass posted looks to be a few bricks shy of a load. Into politics he goes!!!

Yeah, though a bike category would probably make sense, I just treat the Event Preparation section as one big glob of posts.
