Poofer regulator question

Post by captain voltaveus » Fri Aug 19, 2022 11:41 am

I’m redoing a small trike poofer and trying to be in full compliance w the FAST. I see competing advice about whether one needs to put a pressure regulator between the source tank and the accumulator tank. I will do course have a low pressure regulator in place for the pilot light and safety shit off valves in all the right spots.

Is a regulator coming out of the source tank necessary?

Cheers!

Don’t know squat about enforceable regulations for this year (or decade for that matter), but here is the thermodynamics to consider …

The accumulator tank - the idea is to evacuate all that propane gas as fast as possible for the delightful ‘Poof’. So that’s straightforward.

Press the button, pull the string … and if you hold it too long or press too frequent, the results are predictable. Big poof vs little poofs vs fart.

Regulating from main to accumulator does two things:

Saves gas as it moderates how much can be dumped by eager operators.

Prevents main tank from freezing when excitable noobs hit the switch.

So, it’s an overall good idea to use one. Gives you control of gas consumption and main tank temperature.

Have fun out there!
