Oh yeah, I had forgotten those! That was way cooler than the fireworks show they do now, the massive fire cannons were great.
Those were kerosene, at dangerously high pressure, right?

The 2001 was kerosene pressurized by propane.

2007 was JP8 driven by propane.

The playa dust and water don't mix. The dust sits on the surface and clogs up water pumps real fast. You could have an over flow on to a box above the sump where the pump is. And have the water fall on to mess / wire pads of decreasing fineness to lets say 100 microns pad. That would be easy to make and protect the pump and keep the water clean also. I'm planning to have water bubbles in tubes as part of camp this yr.
but they will be sealed. Also projecting 3 solar colored flood lights through a tube of water. This creates a wall 9' tall and 12' wide of colored flames that pulsate in a completely random way. quite beautiful. I have 40 yrs of experience with custom pond design and very large reef aquarium design. Be glad to help. Good Luck

While we are on the subject of water....
This is the only photo I have found of the water slides in 2007.
I know about and understand the health regulations now prohibiting such.
But I am still interested in how this was done, and any additional photos.
It was only my second year, and I remember how amazed I was at this incongruous sight in the desert.

And this oil fountain left me breathless and ducking for cover.

Wow, I like that monster fountain right there. My 5-year-old son would have screamed on top of his lungs. Haha..

The Lamplighter lounge used to have a water fountain feature. People loved the sound, but it was apparently a huge mud puddle at the end of every year and thus a pain to pack up. It was before my time, so I don't know the details, but I suppose I could ask around if you're interested.

Ok... how about something like this. Ive seen cool water fountains that run digitized bursts of water in sheets so that it makes patterns and pictures as it falls. What about something in that vein , but that was encased beteween two big panes of plexiglass so your closed system doesnt get gunked. Bonus points for adding led lighting effects through the water, triple word score for making it curved into a circle so you could be surrounded by it, God level if it could be like a dome, and you could go inside it and have water dance above your head in the middle of the desert, but still have all the water trapped in it's closed system, kind of like a bowl nested over a slightly larger bowl. Add music and you can marry the water pattern to the beat... decorate the edges of the glass with interactive fire sculpture.....
