Playa Dust Firing Temperature.... ?
Playa Dust Firing Temperature.... ?
Does anyone have any experience firing small ceramic items made from playa dust?
If so, what firing temperature/cone worked best for you?

Miss Ratti,
It would be my pleasure to Gimmie you. But, you will have to wait until 2018.
First I will need to get me some 'Gimmie Dust' this year.

This is a real item. You can make biscuits if you'd like! I wonder if playa dust can be molded in this?

Unless I'm mistaken, I believe Goathead has fired playa dust into some form of pendants in the past, and he would likely know. Unfortunately, I don't see him around here much anymore.

Thank you,
I am guessing that 1,100-1,200 deg. is about what I am looking at.

Hello
For firing catch up to Marty in the bar, he made some great swag 2010?
Has some experience with temps for ceramics.
My stuff gets around, errrrr, 2600 degrees but, I am not using a kiln.

Confirm that. Gypsum begins to melt around 2660 F. Don't know if playa dust will break down or congeal at that temperature.

If you read http://www.foresight.org/Conferences/MN ... /Gillett1/, specifically Table 2 column BRP, you can then look up the melting point of the constituent compounds. The LOI is organic material which would burn at a lower temperature.

What it turns into.
If you use it as a ceramic glaze it's more of a light brown. When I get home I will post a pic of what Marty made using it as a glaze.

I Believe the gargoyles in the Temple of Transition were made partially of playa dust.
but probably not fired. maybe you could just fire it at increasing higher temps and see what happens.

@Goathead - beautiful! Wonder if carbon from LOI contributes to the color?

LOI ? Stones I make from just playa are an iridescent, jet black. The other stones I make with ashes, have the same jet black, but with hues of grey, brown, green, blue, i would guess from the various minerals in our bodies.

Try some Ghost pepper. It's usually cherry-flavored.
