How to stabilize generator for art car

Post by mrpi » Fri Jun 15, 2018 3:02 am

Hey Burners!

We are building an artcar for Nowhere this year (Nowhere is the EU Burn).
I am now working on the power for the massive soundsystem, smoke machines, LED strips etc and we need quite some power: around 13 KvA.

Unfortunately I have found it almost impossible to find voltage stabilized generators of 13kva.
Is there any other way to stabilize the signal?
Do you see other solutions?
How do other big artcars do this?

Try looking at power conditioners. Some UPS systems have power conditioning built in as well. Your budget is going to be the deciding factor.

Hey there
Getting clean power out of a diesel(?) generator can be tricky. If there is a steady load the power will fluctuate less. You may have to condition the power at each point of use with a UPS for the most sensitive parts. Generators designed for home use (usually natural gas) have more power conditioning for sensitive electronics.

Honda's EU7000IS generators should be stable, have clean inverter power and are able to run in parallel according to this ad. ... gLEqPD_BwE
You should be able to get 14KVA from them. The ad says that a parallel kit is not available but if they are anything like Honda's smaller generators any competent (and I do mean competent) electrician could wire them together. These are for the US market 120/240V at 60 cycles. I know the UK is 220V 50 cycles and assume the rest of Europe is also. However, US ISO specs for motors etc. call for them to be useable on US and European power. Maybe your stuff will work on US power? Also, Honda may have a model for Europe.
Good luck.

yup, proper power conditioners before your electronics should do the trick.

also amps with Power Factor Correction will help a lot, such as powersoft K series.
