Ames Room for 2016

Post by carefactornil » Mon Nov 02, 2015 10:10 am

Hey all,

Doesn't appear to be a forum set up for 2016 yet so posting here for now (feel free to move to somewhere more appropriate).

Built a few large things at BM before, including HOPE in 2014 and the big maze in 2012.

I'm hoping to build what I think would be Burning Man's first Ames Room in 2016 (please let me know if one HAS been done before there!). You may have seen one before, but not know what it's called. This video gives you a good idea:

Think it'll be fun for people to interact in and fool their visual sense. Your brain knows what you are seeing is wrong, but can't understand why.

I'm actually based in London, UK. Because of the distance and my time available in the USA, I'm hoping to do this project a bit differently to the mad rush projects I've done before. I plan to project manage, design and fund it. To find a small team who can then cut and test build in Reno (the Generator) and then we build it together for real on the playa when I arrive. Have submitted a LOI for an art grant already.

So if you're based around Reno and fancy getting involved in constructing this, then let me know. Already have 1 person on the ground there for now, looking for others. Design/plans should be ready around Feb/Mar I think giving plenty of time to build it.

Thoughts, questions and suggestions welcome. Interested in doing it with a BM twist for the decor/interior, so any suggestions that would work within the context of the illusion welcome too.

Cheers,

"Cheese" Simon

I think that many people have experienced something like this at Burning Man but no strangely shaped rooms were required.

Looks like it will be fun to visit.

In the previous iteration of the exploratorium there was one. I don't know if they have in the Pier 15 local. Magic Marty would. It was kinda cool.

I saw my first one at Knott's Berry Farm. Back in the 1960's when it was free and the only rides were the Stage Coach through town, The burro rides and the Full Sized Train. I loved the Farm. Their 'Haunted Miner's Cabin' also had a trough with water running uphill.

Then I saw another room years later at the Mystery Spot in Northern California. Yes!! Build one. Bring it to the burn. It would be a hoot.

Now that the 2-16 boards are live I've moved this into Art & Performance. Sounds like an awesome project, good luck pulling it together.

There was one done in 2008, which appears to be an Ames type of room.

Edit: as I was typing this post, a commercial popped on TV for Tamiflu. It looks like the same type of thing. http://www.ispot.tv/ad/7FQq/tamiflu-a-really-big-deal

Thanks for the pic. Because the pic is from the perfect angle, it's difficult to tell whether it was even a "room" or not. This will be different though.

Just to say in case anyone is wondering, I'm going to put this one on hold for another year.

But instead I'll be building a giant maze, and I'll post about that in a mo.
