2016 Map and street names: Now with parking

Post by BoyScoutGirl » Tue Jun 14, 2016 4:07 pm

Map released for this year: http://burningman.org/event/black-rock- ... city-plan/

Image

Street names:
Arno
Botticelli
Cosimo
Donatello
Effigare
Florin
Guild
High Renaissance
Italic
Justice
Knowledge
Lorenzo

New for this year is a parking lot along the outside edge of the 9 o'clock side. For what it's worth: I "live" in Center Camp and have been moving my car to out past the edge of the city every year for the past 3 years and it's worked well.

That's bullshit, there goes my view...Wtf was wrong with keeping your car in your space?

First they thought this was a good area for PnPs, now they're gifting us every camp's unwanted vehicles to admire...
Sooner or later, it will get real strange...

There's no fucking way I'd leave a vehicle out there unattended. I'd sooner stay home.

I use my truck for secure storage. Things like my wallet, money, laptop, and other things I don't want left out are kept locked in my truck. I'll park at my camp thank you very much.

Think of it as one more incentive to keep your vehicles at or within your camp. Now, unattended or seemingly abandoned vehicles have a place to get towed to. :D

It would be nice to get rid of all those trucks surrounding the porta potties. (DPW and the like). They have notes and names on them but that doesn't make it attractive.

While this certainly ruins the view and the vibe of people who choose to camp on the outer ring, I first heard about this plan during the Theme Camp Symposium last Spring, and I support it.

Apparently, some people from the inner circles were already parking their cars in the outer rings, often driving in at night, locking their car in or near someone else's camp, and leaving it there for the duration of the event. Large camps with great placement were not actually dealing with the total number of vehicles their customers, sorry, "campmates", were bringing to the event, causing hassle for everyone else. This new parking lot is an attempt to alleviate that problem, both for those large camps and for those who have had to deal with abandoned vehicles in their space.

While I would have preferred an area set away from the main body of the city, and certainly not extending around the entire arc of the 9:00 o'clock side, I think this is a decent response to a growing problem, and will get worked out to be less intrusive on others over time.

Between 5 and 7 looks like less intrusive turf to me, they already have a few containers and other junk parked in that area.

Hopefully parking will be sparse, not a solid line of cars.

Many people gravitate to play on this side of the city towards sunset every evening.

Perhaps all of those cars will help corral the city's run-away ez-up and shade structure population... a brake check for out of control wind surfers.
Sooner or later, it will get real strange...

That's where I've always parked, but now that I think about that might be staff and long-term volunteer parking...?

They didn't mark it on the map, but between 5-7 is LEO's shooting gallery. Can't mess with that free-for-all shit show, wouldn't want to obstruct their fines justice...

You guys think of that as junk, but people do live there. DPW, box office, tech team, and other core staff members - many of which are on site for weeks - live in that neighborhood. Every abandonware vehicle that gets parked there is one less opportunity for people camping that bring art into the neighborhood.

Regarding the changes to the 9:00 side, last year Paris Hilton complained that there was not enough parking for her guests and it was taking her employees too long to replenish the ice at her plug-and-play. It's nice to see BMorg respond so quickly by reorganizing the city so dramatically for the first time in many years.

Don't those groups have actual camps within the city, or do they just insist on sleeping in their vehicles near their work stations? There's no art in that section of the city because it's a parking lot which no one frequents, which is why it would make sense to designate it as a parking area...It's basically a no-man's land anyways, except for the LEOs and their line of sight.

I was with Paris during the entirety of last year's burn, and I can assure you, with complete confidence, that those words were never uttered nor were those sentiments ever expressed.

It's like parking SF's abandoned vehicles all on Embarcadero and Lombard streets, instead of the Hunter's Point or China Basin areas...

Pro-Tip: For those of you who will be new to BRC this year. After passing greeters (where you ring the bells and get major hugs), that huge empty area between 5-7 and the outermost ring road is all that lies between you and your camp.
Use extreme caution when navigating this area, as you're not quite out of the woods just yet. Here, the LEOs are basically shooting fish in a barrel. This is their barrel...Don't fuck around.

Park my truck out there? No way. But my flat bed trailers (for bringing my art car and art piece)? Absolutely. I tried this last year and it was great except I almost got boxed in by camps that sprung up around it. Now at least I know that won't happen.

At least the flat bed trailer would make a nice, elevated platform to throw down a couch or beanbag and watch the sunset, maybe some sexy-time too. Who knows...

Let me know where you want it and I'll make sure to park it there. I might even have a couch to throw on top. And feel free to give it a christening with the partner of your choosing. Or go solo. :D

I think Trilo was referring to the DPW "ghetto" in the city (along D or F between 5 and 6 or so?) while you and I were referring to out by the fence.

Actually, the DPW Ghetto is just a fairly small space in comparison. Almost all the container space camps between 5 and 7 are just that, camps. I know more than a few people who work for Burning Man year round and who are on site for plenty of time before and after the event that either camp inside one of those container boxes, or that their camp is built in and around the containers.
