Any Reverse Traffic?

Post by TeresaJones » Mon Jun 06, 2016 8:20 pm

So due to circumstances beyond my control (the prospect of being kicked out of my academic program if I miss too many classes) it looks like I might not make it to Burning Man this year. :( My boyfriend is still going, and what I'd really like to do (better than nothing) is ride with him into BRC and help him set up, then hitch a ride back to civilization so I can get away with only missing a couple of days of class.

I've looked on the BM rideshare site and checked out the bus schedule, but, as one would expect, all the outgoing traffic is scheduled for the end of the event.

However, I know that there are people who come down early to set up, and I imagine that not all of them stay into the week of the event itself.

So does anyone know of anyone planning to leave BRC around August 29th? I'm trying to salvage what I can of my dreams for Burning Man 2016.

If all you need is a ride back to Reno, you should have no problem finding that any day before, during, or after the event.
On the fly. Grab your stuff and hang out near gate with a sign.
Sooner or later, it will get real strange...

I'd not just "hang out near gate"......if you go there, ask where or if you are allowed to hitchhike in the zone. I'd say safest to hitch from inside Greeters. the exit lane is historically on the west side.

Greeters, now that's what I'm talking about. It is near Gate...road?

Gate road, goes from Greeters (at the edge actual of the city/trashfence), to Hwy 37. The section between Gate and Greeters is also referred to as "Moes Road".
no hitchhiking is allowed between Greeters and Gate (Moes road), I'm not sure if there is an actual place at Gate itself, and then Gate road from Gate to 37 is only for ingress/egress. So standing with your thumb out will get you a visit from the Perimeter dept (the smart and good looking ones), or BLM, or LE.
I'd suggest looking for a ride inside the city as described, or somehow get out to the highway.

Yeah, just inside of greeters is where any outgoing traffic is getting funneled down to one or two outbound lanes. That's the spot.

If you go to the playa, there are any number of complications that can fix things so that you can't actually get back to civilization on some pre-determined schedule. For example, in 2014 I lived on Gate Road for 24 hours...no one could enter the city, leave the playa, or drive around due to a rainstorm and prohibition of all driving. There is a non-zero risk that your plans for returning on time will fall apart.

Hate to be the first one to say it in this thread, but: Burning Man is not more important than your education/job/relationships/whatever.

If you actually care about finishing school, then don't put yourself in the position to really fuck up something you wanted. And if you don't care about finishing school, quit now so you can plan ahead what you're going to do with your life, rather than having that decision thrust on you accidentally.

In 2015, mid week, there was a steady stream of thin skinned people leaving Black rock City for less dusty accommodations. From what I understand, there were three lanes of traffic for 3 days of people leaving. My guess is they got to make that Sharpie check mark on the bucket list, and it was time to move on.

Teresa - please private message me with your email addy. I'm in a fairly large village and one of our core team members makes multiple trips back and forth to Reno during build week, plus leaves early for a work thing...

Also, you might be able to hitch a ride back to Reno at the aitport. During that part of the week, there are sometimes pilots making empty runs back to Reno to pickup random items needed by a friend or camp.

Honestly, I'd sell the ticket and not even bother going. The gate opens the 28th but you might not even make it in until after midnight. Save your money. It'll kill you to have to leave him there. I hope this isn't a trust issue.

More of a "we were gonna do this thing together and now I'm bailing on him" kind of issue. :/
