The Burning Man Regional , BURN2 , will be held in the virtual world of SecondLife
on OCT 18th - 26th 2014. The BURN2 site is located here ... http://www.burn2.org/ .

For any of you who cannot make a RealLife Burning Man event, or if you just can't get enuff,
please check out the Virtual Playa , complete with Art Cars, Lamplighters, Camps & builds,
Music, dancing .... anything goes!

I do know Danger Ranger. And thank you for taking the time to reply. I can remember a time when I thought Burning Man wasn't for me either, so there's always hope. I'm sure it's fun for those that are into it, but I guess what I don't like is the idea of fake personas and unrealistic avatars. I'm sure it's a great event for those who attend--especially those that can't attend the real deal and I hope it's a big success for you. (I may drop in, but no promises )

With its apparent focus on dancing and drumming, the little I've seen of the group called Lamplighters in Burn2 seems much more akin to the Fire Conclave of Black Rock City than to the Lamplighters of BRC. Do the Burn2 Lamplighters mark the transition between day and night in the game?

Yes! .. Lamplighters do processions and light the lamps , then drum & dance for a few hours afterwards.

I got into Second Life a long time ago, to the point where I was building in-world and writing scripts. At one point I had a "Billie Jean Experience" which let you re-live a portion of the music video with your avatar.

This past year I met one of the founders and talked about some of his new work he's doing. Second Life is really interesting because it represents 'contemporary art' to what will unquestionably become a commonplace normal experience: immersive VR. The work Carmack is doing with Oculus is crucial to the development of this new way of engaging with others through technology.

I'm just seeing this now, and it sounds pretty cool. It is not trivial to build stuff or promote it, so kudos for sticking with it.

I haven't logged in for a while, but I just pulled down the client and will check it out and report back on what I find. If you haven't tried Second Life yet, it is certainly worth trying first hand. Like anything else there are shirtcockers (in SL they are called "griefers" but you can handle / navigate around them like you do in the real BRC.

I just checked this out, and it is more organized and populated than this thread implies. Apparently this has been going on years?

This is very interesting to me, in part because of the discussion I observed in-world. Someone there had not yet been to Burning Man, and asked the group I was dancing with questions about it. The person described their interest in attending and got feedback. The virtual playa here is surprisingly reminiscent of BRC. I see this as a potential augmentation of what the year-round BM experience could be. This would probably be even more interesting with immersive VR.

Apparently, there are going to be multiple stages going with music tonight. I'm going to check this out more this week and possibly compile a report on it. If you're curious at all, I encourage people to download the Second Life "viewer" and check it out. Might be a bit overwhelming at first, but people are friendly there and it is worth a look!

I usually spend a few hours every year exploring Burn 2 (Drawingablank there too). Usually I am fire spinning.

One thing I've noticed that seems different is most of the chat windows have all sorts of gobbledygook such as symbols, musical notes, punctuation, etc.. often with just one or two words. Can someone with more experience with second life please explain what the reason for them is because it makes it really hard to follow chats.

I actually asked someone if they wanted help stacking their moop. (I think it was gas containers for the hot air balloon ride) But they ignored me.

It is a bit hard to get started (steep learning curve) in SL in general. Trying to figure out how to warp in to the right spot is an extra hurdle. Give it some more time, I bet you figure it out.

A: in Secondlife, yes, on playa, no - it's geared to nudity but not sex or violence on the playa.

@spacetime - yes, been going on for many years, there are 3-4 burn events per year usually
There are 3 main stages and maybe 5-7 camp stages .... the most popular draw
40-50 people and play trance music, tho there is a big "live" scene with people
streaming their guitar/voice .

@jackass - All you need is to show up, people come in costume, or normal, you will see people in a
tux or formal dress and heels hanging out with nekkid folks Almost Anything goes!

@Drawingablank - I saw you there! the chat stuff is mostly young raver type folk radically expressing
themselves, Ascii-art gestures are very popular with the younger crowd

@Ratty - the Six Burn2 sims avatar limit have all been raised, so it should be easier to get in now.

Here's a nice selfie of me with a few friends I made one day last year.

Unfortunately, last time I visited it was after the burn, and somehow I fell off the edge of the world and into the sea. Chances are, I'm still there... trying to find a way back onto solid land. So if you happen to see a wet raccoon with a backpack, say "Heya Phreed!!!" and I'll do what I can to manipulate my words and actions appropriately in return.

If you get into Second Life, and can't find the event...
look at the top left of your screen, the viewer control tabs are there. ( Avatar, Comm, World, etc...)
the 3rd one is "World" , click it and choose "World Map" ( or hit ctrl m )
when the map opens, on the right of the map screen is a button labeled "Find".
in the 'find' search box, type- Burning Man -and hit Find!
this will show a list of all sims in the event, click any sim and choose the
"teleport" button on the bottom right of the map screen.

the burning man sims are:

Burning Man- Opal
Burning Man- Black Rock
Burning Man- Rabbit Hole
Burning Man- Deep Hole
Burning Man- Jade
Burning Man- Gypsum
