During the weekend of March 30-April 2, 2017, Burning Man will host its 11th annual Global Leadership Conference (GLC) in downtown Oakland, CA at the Oakland Marriott City Center. The conference will bring together over 600 Regional Contacts, Community Leaders, Burning Man Staff, artists and theme camp leaders to explore the unique nature of leadership in a collaborative culture. And we’d love for our Bay Area community to join us on Sunday...that’s YOU.
YOU are invited to Burning Man’s Global Leadership Conference Sunday Showcase on SUNDAY, APRIL 2nd for two inspiring panels. See below for program details.
Admission is $10 for each panel, $20 for both, and open to the public. Space is limited and registration via Eventbrite is required. Global Leadership Conference attendees need not register via Eventbrite.

Sunday Showcase Program
PANEL 1: Ensuring the Sustainability and Safety of our Art, Maker, Community and Alternative Living Spaces
11:30 AM - 1:00 PM, April 2, 2017

Almost all artistic hubs and cities have one or more spaces that serve multiple functions from meetings, work and even as untraditional residences for our community members across the world. These spaces are incubators for ideas and offer a safe environment for performances and gatherings. As these spaces, for the most part, fall outside of traditional and conventional use and review, the first line of responsibility for ensuring their safety falls on us.
Join Jon Sarriugarte (Form and Reform Studios, Survival Research Laboratories), who served on Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf’s Task Force on Artist Housing & Workspaces, Tyler Hanson from We the Artists of the Bay Area, Denver Regional Contact Meg “Calamity” Woodhouse and Burning Man Fire Art Safety Team Manager Dave X as they explore how we can ensure that these valuable community spaces survive and thrive.

PANEL 2: Civic Arts: Community Activation Beyond Black Rock City
2:15 PM - 3:45 PM, April 2, 2017
Civic Art has the potential to generate community not only through interactions around a finished piece, but also through the creation of work. In this panel discussion we will hear perspectives from artists and leaders in the field who help facilitate community through the creation of art. We’ll talk about the challenges and rewards of engaging with audiences less familiar with Burning Man culture and hear what the term “civic arts” means to them. Come with your philosophical and logistical questions as we delve into what it takes to create work outside of Black Rock City.

Panelists include:
Ryan Adams: Ryan is the acting CEO for maker space Artech in Reno. Artech hosts artists for residencies that encourage collaboration and experimentation. Artech serves as a unique model for creating work and connecting people and resources.

Curt Benedetto: Curt serves on the Board of Directors for the San Diego Collaborative Arts Project, the organization behind the CoLab maker space and the San Diego official regional event YOUtopia. Curt also oversees YOUtopia’s grant process in his role as Content Hub Lead and gives away $100k in art grants annually.

Caroline Miller (Mills): Mills has been with the Flaming Lotus Girls artist collective for 13 years, supporting commercial, non-profit, and temporary public art projects and helping to propagate new art in the world.

Burning Man’s Artist Advocate Maria Partridge will facilitate this panel. She supports self-funded artists on playa and is very active in the civic arts realm, most recently spearheading the Reno Playa Art Park.

You're the reason they canceled it for next year.
