2026 Online Census is open!

[some seeing eye]

Black Rock City has a census, some regionals too.

The census is a scientific measurement of the participants in Black Rock City. There are several years of archives for your reading pleasure.

On playa, Census volunteers volunteers sample the main car gate, the airport gate, and the Burner Express Bus. They will select, say every 4th person in the lines, and they are asked to fill out an about 10 question form.

The short form has things that are static, age, sexual identity, education, home location, income, and which ticket sale they got their ticket, things like that.

It is a random sample enough, a "scientific poll."

Then comes the online census. The online census is self-selected. It should be a larger number, say 5x. It has more questions, and all the arty questions you see in past censuses final reports.

The random gate sample is used to mathematically weight the self-selected sample to make a scientific sample of all the questions.

Free to participate! It's voluntary and you can skip questions.
