If you look at a map of BLM land near Gerlach, the rest is privately owned. The Southern part of the playa toward Gerlach is private land with mining claims. It is possible to mine on BLM land too, but it is a longer process not guaranteed to be approved.
From the horse's mouth they are going onto their second stage of exploration using magnetic fields. If it proves out this is the plan:

It is hard to imagine that disturbances in the South playa will not disrupt the formation of Lake Lahontan, and its playa-healing process over all of the Black Rock Desert. Two mining options are pumping brine into large evaporation ponds, or an open pit mine. Do we have geologists on ePlaya?

Is some mining information that has been put on FB. Seems accurate and interesting.
Some of the comments regarding location:
Google Maps seems to say it is Trego Hot Springs, south of the RR tracks and North of Trego Rd. and north of 49 which is Jungo Rd. Could be off on this but the article refers to Lithium Springs, and Googling brings this up.
I think Lithium Springs is not an official name but an obfustication.
lithium springs is what the company named the claims on the south BR playa. The mine claims are a few thousand feet from homes and adjacent to other private property. They would probably use the geothermal aquifer that underlies all of Gerlach. Development of the project would pose a threat to life and property in Gerlach.

Full name is Lithium Springs Project. From 3 mile playa entrance to the railroad tracks, to the curve by the gas station then back to the 34 hwy through Burning Mans 360 property.

Everyone is so politically fucked up that they're segregating themselves in the name of equal rights and liberation.
