1996's Helco

Postby phil » Sun Aug 12, 2007 9:55 pm

http://laughingsquid.com/weird-americas-video-of-helco-from-burning-man-1996/

Laughing Squid has a video of the Seemen's Helco performance on Saturday night. (Back in the old days, children, the Man burned on Sunday night.)

This was Louise's and my first year. I will tell you that the video is edited and makes the event look much more exciting than I remember. It was a long, dragged out affair, as I recall it, and without the exciting background music.

(These photo pages were done when it was all dial-up, so the pages are short and the photos small.)

I could not agree more! It was my first time there and to behold such an amazing spectacle is why I have come back each year and freely donate my time to the event.
Those who think they can and those who think they can't are both right.

Dogs, motorcycles driving willy-nilly, spontanteous conflagrations and things that go BOOM in the night.

And that zipline off a burning skyscraper was fucking classic.

My first year too, Phil.

:-> Looks like I'm outvoted.

Sob! I wonder what's _wrong_ with me.

edit:

> motorcycles driving willy-nilly

:-> I remember "pedestrians have right of way over all traffic, including motorcycles."

"Today, motorcycles have right of way over pedistrians."

"No, now pedestrians have right of way over all vehicles, including motorcycles."

"No parking in the blue zones. Take the brown acid. Choose the pink pill. AIIIIIEEEEEEE!"

Seems to me like it would really suck that 11 years later, I still hadn't been able to improve upon the experience. Why do you guys continue to invest the time, energy, and expense into something that's just not as good (as you seem to be saying)?

It's 12.

Wait, I'm confused. "Can't improve upon the experience"? "Just not as good"?

It was better _last_ year, trilo. It always was.

Because the optimist in me whispers to hold on to the possibility that something just as great and as magnificently fucking nutz just might happen again the next time around.

Hell, it sure beats waiting around in front of a TV waiting for re-run episode of Friends.

Know what I mean?

1996 was my first year too, I barely remember that burn, and I think you're all hippies.

After this year's eco friendly and oh so politically correct theme,
will 2008 be the year for another theme like Helco? Will the
pendulum swing?

It's going to be alright.

Wow, that floods the data banks... I helped build that tower, the center camp shade structure, and a few others. My First year and a great experience of getting involved.

I don't care what the borg says: feather-wearers will NOT be served in Rosie's Bar.
When I ask how many burns, I mean at BRC.
