A Burner Lexicon
Hi everyone, I recently started a project on my blog to document some of the slang of our subculture. If you're interested, you can find it at:
http://kitoconnell.com/lexicon/
I have a list of words to come in the future, but I am very open to suggestions from about future definitions.

Thanks for the reference! You can also find 13 years of them in Adrian's anthology of Piss Clear.
However- they cannot be used under someone elses creative commons license as they're already covered by copywrite. We love people using them, but not claiming credit for our work documenting the lingo.
Kitoconnell- I know you're not claiming credit for our work, and please go crazy with your lexicon. It's not like there's only one way to define the words, and even the words we created to fill a need (darkwad anyone?) are now in common use. Its not like we own the words themselves. Besides, your style is more dictionary, ours is more "snark"!
I just needed to point out the legal mumbo-jumbo when we're referenced as a source.

I already have an entry written on Darkwad which is slated to go up tomorrow. If they overlap with your words I promise it's just a coincidence -- the word was suggested independently on another discussion thread, but I'll give you a tip of the hat as well. I greatly respect the work of the Piss Clear and its descendants.
There will be a bit of snark in my definitions but it's meant to be useful too, and all in one place. I'm definitely inspired a bit by the Devil's Dictionary, so I will have a lot of opinion in there too.

Kit-
Like I said in the "official" post, I wouldn't stress about it. As long as its not cut & paste (and I read some of your work- it's definitely not) we're good. I just needed to do the legal dance when I saw us referenced as a possible source.
Besides, can there ever really be too much info? And the amount of "lingo" used at the event & regionals grows every year. I'm sure you'll find words we never thought of including.
Though I did think it was funny to hear a middle aged lady yell at a car that didn't have it's lights on (in SF) "Don't be a darkwad!"

Not stressed about it at all. Thanks for sharing that great story, too! :)
There's an Internet friend I've never managed to meet in person, except that she once almost ran me over on her bike. I was headed for home base to get a headlamp as the sun set, and she almost hit me with her bike. The word 'darkwad' wasn't invented yet, to my knowledge, but I am sure that's what she'd have yelled at me if it was. We figured it out later when we both read about the incident in each other's blogs. :)

I'd be more impressed if this word list offered something more than the usual word list, eg date & credit for first published usage.
Apropos of nothing, I'm looking forward to the verbing of terms like 'darkwad'.

Bob: I will try to speak to the origin of words where they can be pinpointed, but how easy is it to pinpoint the very first person to say or first place that 'weekender' appeared? Or any number of other Burner words.
Today's entry is Ranger:

Isn't that what a lexicographer does, by definition?kitoconnell wrote:Bob: I will try to speak to the origin of words where they can be pinpointed, but how easy is it to pinpoint the very first person to say or first place that 'weekender' appeared? Or any number of other Burner words.

A lexicographer is someone who compiles a dictionary. I will certainly try to figure out the origins of a word, or explain its etymology where applicable. If you happen to know more about one of the words I post, I will certainly update any entries to include that information.

Dang, you could make 200 buttons with that saying to beschwag with. (sorry, Bob, I know that noun wasn't verbed in the modern style. I love that passing form.)kitoconnell wrote:I'm not sure but there's probably a dick joke in here somewhere.

FWIW there is an online resource from the Piss Clear archives:

And that also is a Dangling Participle by itself with an open ended possibility of a double or even a triple entendre finishing off a setence.theCryptofishist wrote:Dang, you could make 200 buttons with that saying to beschwag with.kitoconnell wrote:I'm not sure but there's probably a dick joke in here somewhere.
It doesn't get any better than that, IMO.

I added sparklepony to the list based on a couple independent suggestions now. I see it was in this year's BRC Weekly but it dates back to at least 2009 or before. Any idea where its origins are?

Daisy ducking is clearly the funniest possible name for female shirt-cocking. But the debate rages on about whether it's just as offensive as when men do it...
