Re: Social Science of the Playa
This article was an 'aha moment' for me. People keep asking why I want to go to Burning Man and I honestly couldn't answer them! I now realize its the sociology of the event that interests me and the creative currents that draw me to it. Very interesting! Thanks!

Re: Social Science of the Playa
I just posted the article on Facebook as an explanation of what draws me to the Burn. Thanks for being so eloquent.

Can someone just give me the executive summary? That article's kind of long.

When I was a kid I used to pray every night for a new bicycle.
Then I realized that the Lord doesn't work that way so I stole one and asked Him to forgive me

Re: Social Science of the Playa
Thank you BurpingMan for posting this. I'm a social scientist, which drew me to my art form: advertising campaign.
It's funny, this year I was using the term Social Engineering all week. Haven't done that in my career if memory serves. This awareness turned my work out there into an even greater sense of purpose, in that I was consciously cognizant of what I really am doing. It focused my energy better is one way to look at it.
The part in the article about playa names was interesting. My name has a family history with it, and only serendipitously associated with my fav shordurpersave (Bob). I enjoy gifting playa names to volunteers who are seeking them, and so many of my volunteers are virgins that they are ecstatic when I tell them their new identity. I believe it makes them more a part of the community.
I use the Census information for marketing purposes - I need to know my audience's demographics, and how best to get into their heads. The culture of participation is the most effective marketing ploy I use.
I only wish I could spend more time building rapport with participants on an individual basis.

I'll be in my blanket fort until further notice.
