Black Rock Center for Unlearning welcomes virgins and veterans alike

Post by Princess_Pee_Foot » Mon Jul 31, 2017 9:32 am

BRCU, the Black Rock Center for Unlearning, has been bringing cocktails, shade and sass to the playa for almost ten years. Every year, we up our game a little bit. This year, we’re doubling the size of our public shade structure and increasing our interactivity with a multi-purpose booth to include spanking, kissing, bad advice, genital appreciation, and probably some other shenanigans no one has thought of yet. We’re bringing a brand new 14’ trampoline and converting our old one into a luxurious cuddle puddle. We’re putting up a stripper pole; updating our lights and frontage -- and bringing back steak night.

Yep. BRCU surf and turf is back. Maybe we’re known for our boozy refreshments or our megaphone porta potty races or my delightfully snarky facebook posts, but I like to think our real legacy is the awesome meal plan. We put on a full thanksgiving dinner, cook up amazing curry, and yeah- we’ll be searing delicious center cut filets in herbed butter and serving them up with homemade chimichurri. We rock breakfast too. Bagels and lox, french toast and bacon, stellar breakfast burritos - the list goes on. Each meal includes vegetarian and gluten free options. And I mean actual vegetarian options - delicious, complete proteins you can sink your teeth into, not just veggie trays and peanut butter sandwiches.

Those two meals a day aren’t brought to you by some five star chef- we all work in the kitchen, whether it’s chopping veggies, cooking bacon, or cleaning up. Each camp member works one to two shifts during the week, helping to make sure we all stay fed. We’re work hard play hard folks. Only we don’t really work that hard until Sunday, when we work together to break down camp. Even then- many hands make light work. And that’s pretty awesome. What’s the Lego song? Everything is awesome when you’re part of a team? Yeah, something like that.

And our team is pretty fucking awesome. We were started in 2009 by a group of friends- mostly virgin burners. Ever since, we’ve made it a priority to welcome new folks - both virgins and veteran burners. BRCU alum have gone on to do amazing things - start their own theme camps, build big art, work with the black rock rangers and about a million other really cool things. We’ve had virgins and fifteen year veterans, twenty somethings and sixty (or seventy?) somethings, loosely knit groups and families. We’ve had hoopers and fire breathers, marathoners, olympians and engineers. Performers, mechanics, photographers, firefighters, doctors. From nurses to musicians, you name it. We come from all over the US, Canada, Australia, Germany, Italy, the UK and probably several other countries I’m forgetting. It all makes for a lively and welcoming community that I’m really proud to be a part of.

I could talk to you all day about how nice it is to have private potties in camp, how even a solar shower is heaven when you’re all dusty, what it’s like to have water bulk delivered so you don’t have to figure out how to carry ten gallons on the burner express, all the people who came before and worked really hard to get our camp to this amazing level of cooperation and organization - but it’s the unique community that forms each year that really makes BRCU home. And this year is shaping up to be one hell of a good time.

We’d love to have you join us. You’re welcome to check out our facebook group or email me directly.
