That was a very well thought out article. Thank you Caveat. The last comment struck me.

I’ll throw a piece of meat to the haters: the 747 did get one piece of special treatment. It was powered by a fully visible and non-mutated tug truck.
You’re not supposed to be allowed to bring a non-self-powered MV and pull it around with a non-mutated truck.

It didn't move around the playa once in place (at least I don't think it did). A non-mutated truck pulled it into it's position.Captain Goddammit wrote: ↑Wed Sep 26, 2018 11:42 amI’ll throw a piece of meat to the haters: the 747 did get one piece of special treatment. I was on this 747 last year when it was sitting on the ground. The hollow inside was set up with funky, color changing lights and some lounge chairs. This year, I was not able to board the white beast. I was parked by it with my artcar for quite a while because of the large crowds, but I left after a few hours to see other installations.

Did m/any of said efforts become a post-event land, legal, and logistic boondogle of the jet's proportion?Captain Goddammit wrote: ↑Tue Sep 25, 2018 6:15 pmThe zero-effort junk that used to roll around is nothing like the big plane MV.

Acknowledged. Do well.

I'm waiting patiently for some 747 updates, hoping they've got something going besides digging out the front continually .

Re: Biggest MOOP in the history of Burning Man
Yes in fact there have been some MVs involved in post-event issues.
La Contessa is the one that first comes to mind.
And a few have been involved in fatalities, which is a way bigger deal than everyone whining because tbe 747 guys hit some soft playa and are having a tough go at it.
It’s far from the first thing to get bogged in soft playa.
Once, 20 years ago, literally everything in BRC did when it rained all day.

Re: Biggest MOOP in the history of Burning Man
As far as updates go-- I saw a photo on FB that shows active laying out of what looks like doubled 1 or 1.25" plywood mats that are offset and shifted so that they overlap together like shiplap siding. Although the picture was not high enough resolution to tell it looked like there may be up to 4 semi trailers full of a like material.

Re: Biggest MOOP in the history of Burning Man
To be fair, maybe it ended up as “mobile art” and not a “Mutant Vehicle”.
Originally it was to be a Mutant Vehicle and was going to be licensed through the same channels as every other. I didn’t go this year when it finally had wheels and didn’t follow things that closely about it.
If that’s how it ended up being classified then the non-mutated “airport tug” truck was fine.
Except it’s not fine for tugging in soft playa haha...

GroundStart: The submarine art car idea is great, and it works well...I know because I've seen it. Nuclear sub conning tower rolls around on playa and looks great...does occasional very loud sonar pings. I don't think I've seen a party barge version, though.

Re: Biggest MOOP in the history of Burning Man
That makes perfect sense. All the weight of that is now landing on the front wheels. On a complete jet, the weight would all be in the center with the four sets of wheels taking the full pressure.666isMONEY wrote: ↑Thu Sep 27, 2018 3:21 pmNo wonder the plane took a nosedive into playa, look how out of balance it is!

They should have just torched it on burn night. Sacrifice it to the Contessa gods.

There’s still time for that!
It’s mostly Aluminum, right?
Add granulated iron oxide and magnesium flakes.
Flares to kick it off.

Looks like rain on the playa this Thursday, otherwise known as welding an aircraft to a desert.

I've seen one post of FB that the plane is on private property.

I saw something on Reddit that volunteers are working on it now, but have hit the soft sand at the edge of the playa. Complete heresay.

FWIW, the guy from DISTRIKT that was out there helping them move the plane posted this on FB yesterday ...

Re: Biggest MOOP in the history of Burning Man
I don't post here much anymore and go as Keru on and off playa, and am as deep in the 747 build as you can get. It has been safely parked on heavy crane mats on private property and the ranchers that own the acreage have put up a cattle fence around it to somewhat define and protect the spot and the plane. All the move equipment has been cleared, the area smoothed and watered, and hopefully a safe winter storage will be had.

As of yesterday, the deep ruts were still on the playa (from a friend who lives in Gerlach who spends about 100+ days on playa)
Maybe rain or snow will flatten and fill them in...

Re: Biggest MOOP in the history of Burning Man
So it didn't make it all the way North to the airport? But wow it sure moved.
Look at how the footprints broke through the soil crust.
I hope they make sure all of the tire tracks upstream of it get smoothed over so they can't end up channelling any water into flowing into there.

Predicting a sad post sometime around next May. I'll hedge my bets and call either sunk deeply into mud (in an artistic tilted fashion) or some really impressive bullet holes and fire scars.
Re: Biggest MOOP in the history of Burning Man
I dont think they realized how many people visit the area all year.
