After volunteering for the past year and a half up there, I can honestly say that the Fly Ranch team is Doing It Right.
They have been listening. Really listening. Instead of laying out a concrete "vision", they have been soliciting the community for one, and the Land Art Grant Initiative is another step in the right direction.

If you can come out, and just want a taste, the guided walks led by Friends of Black Rock are awesome.

If you're thirsty for more, practice some Communal Effort at the Work Weekends (announced via the newsletter) which will also allow you to spend more time connecting with both the land and the folks that are guiding the process.

So instead of the “can do, let’s build some awesome right now” BM attitude, Fly is gonna become some hippie-trippie process driven community ivory tower thinking feel good cluster fuck and not produce anything tangible for at least a decade?
Sounds about right.
Sounds about right.

Re: FLY 2020
fuck theme camps.
THEME TRAILER PARKS.
i’m in for a self-sustaining earthship doublewide.
but in all seriousness, this actually looks pretty nifty, and i’d like to retire in what will be a center of innovation and creative mojo.
also, so i can yell at all the kids to get off my hardscrabble lawn.

Re: FLY 2020
Would like to know how that person in the video lived out there a whole year?
Sack of wheat, flour mill, beans, potatoes???
Years ago I lived on dried feed corn, soybeans, salt and vitamin C for a year.

She was 28 miles from beautiful downtown Gerlach. The Ranch is just down the road. While she probably lived by herself there where other people around and stores where available. Radios work out there and cell phones sometimes.666isMONEY wrote: ↑Sat Jan 25, 2020 5:38 pmWould like to know how that person in the video lived out there a whole year?

Don't know that I'd want to live on feed corn but soybeans etc. might be doable.
