I don't know if they could legally enforce that, since they would not be on duty. But they would surely leave that to the lawyers, for later. (Realistically, I would expect there are provisions for officers to remain on duty until the public has been removed from their public lands.)

(While we are waiting for more MOOP-related news.... (Otherwise this would belong in the Politics section.) )

Seems to me, for Congress to fail to pass a budget by the prescribed date constitutes abdication. All members of the 113th United States Congress are now unemployed, and we the people need to call the First 21st-Century Congress to form a new nation on the soil formerly known as the United States of America.
constitutional convention!! now is the time. good call Elliot!

Then none of us would want to go to Burning Man in the first place, because we would all have far more important things going on, such as The Second Revolutionary War, or an opportunistic invasion by a foreign power.

The difficulty with forming a new government is that we may not be able to find competent people for the task.

Or.... But.... Actually, we probably do have such people, but they are too smart to have gotten involved in politics. In that case, I might welcome Warren Buffet as our George Washington.

In the down-to-Earth department.... If the shutdown continues for several months, I would join those who have for years clamored for moving the event to private land. It would not likely be possible to do that for 2014, but the event could be reborn with a vengeance a couple years later. (Wild guess... that the org may have been working on such contingency plans for years?)

As for Cascadia, I see no reason to tamper with Canada -- -- except to physically connect us with Alaska and the wealth there! A nasty trick against the rest of Canada, but Cascadia could instantly become one humdinger of a country. And we could treat the rest of Canada most brotherly. Of course, I would include the northern half of California.

I'm with ya Elliot!!
I like "modified Cascadia" where the southern border is S.F. bay. I say that, even geographically it could be argued, that the Sutter Buttes are the southernmost projection of the Cascade fault, in line with Shasta and Lassen. Of course, they are defined now as a free standing mountain range, independant,.........but to get the border down here, I'd go with it.

we'd need to ask Britz bitz though.........she, being queen of Cascadia at the moment.

We might want to include the whole Bay Area with San Jose. And we would not want to split any major population area across the state. So I'm thinking of a border from Monterey Bay, between Merced and Fresno, to near Bishop.

(Talk about thread drift!)

Oh, there is plenty reason to tamper with Canada. We've got George Bush North running our country right now. He's a terrible Prime Minister. So much BS going on within our gov't over the past 7 years. And he's planning on running again in 2015, we don't have any rule in Canada about how many years someone can be Prime Minister. Canada doesn't have it's shit as together as most people think.

Bring on Cascadia. It would be a seriously bad ass country. And yes, of course Northern California would have to be included!

I believe my job title on FB is "Supreme Leader Madame President of Cascadia".
In addition being a "CommUniCORn", of course.

The proposed Cascadian border pleases me.

When the various possible forms of government are compared, the winner must surely be Benevolent Monarchy. Trouble is, of course, finding one person on Earth who is qualified.

For those who just discovered this thread.... This thread was spun off from an other thread, where we drifted too far from the original topic. Here we discuss -- lightheartedly (mostly) -- the possibility of taking the opportunity during the current federal government "abdication" to create a new nation along Western North America to be called Cascadia, after the mountain range. :D

y'know Prince Rainier did a pretty good job in Monaco.
Benevolent dictatorship is a good way to go.

but yeah, it'd be hard to seat the first one.
Prolly be Canadian, in that they are way more polite and friendly.
Western Canada, that is. a "native" so to speak. Eastern Canada might have a propensity for surrender.

and if you ever look at a north pole centric, world map, we'd be sitting at a vital trade route and passage. We could construct the "Palin memorial watchtower" to see across the Bering strait and all, to watch for errant ships.
As the poles warm. that's gonna be a hot bed of commercial and geopolitical activity.

I'd still back Britz. she already has posters and a tag line........but........I'll let her divulge if she sees fit.

Of course an important job qualification for this Benevolent Monarch is that he live forever. You do not know who would come in behind him.

I think any good liability lawyer would crap his pants if their client tried to host this shindig on private property.

Wasn't really sure which thread this post should go in.

The Great Nation of Cascadia would be happy to host the Burn in the event that our former (Half)Motherland, the United States of America cannot sort it's shit out by next August.

Well, somewhere around here there is probably a thread called something like "The org ought to buy its own land".

Which might not be a bad idea. There must be some real estate savvy folks here.... What might a similar acreage in a similarly desolate area cost?

Otherwise.... When I become Emperor of The Sovereign Nation of Cascadia, I will set aside a suitable location, call it the Burning Man National Park, and make the whole week a National Holiday.
