I don't know if they could legally enforce that, since they would not be on duty. But they would surely leave that to the lawyers, for later. (Realistically, I would expect there are provisions for officers to remain on duty until the public has been removed from their public lands.)

Seems to me, for Congress to fail to pass a budget by the prescribed date constitutes abdication. All members of the 113th United States Congress are now unemployed, and we the people need to call the First 21st-Century Congress to form a new nation on the soil formerly known as the United States of America.

Then none of us would want to go to Burning Man in the first place, because we would all have far more important things going on, such as The Second Revolutionary War, or an opportunistic invasion by a foreign power.

The difficulty with forming a new government is that we may not be able to find competent people for the task.

Or.... But.... Actually, we probably do have such people, but they are too smart to have gotten involved in politics. In that case, I might welcome Warren Buffet as our George Washington.

In the down-to-Earth department.... If the shutdown continues for several months, I would join those who have for years clamored for moving the event to private land. It would not likely be possible to do that for 2014, but the event could be reborn with a vengeance a couple years later. (Wild guess... that the org may have been working on such contingency plans for years?)

As for Cascadia, I see no reason to tamper with Canada -- -- except to physically connect us with Alaska and the wealth there! A nasty trick against the rest of Canada, but Cascadia could instantly become one humdinger of a country. And we could treat the rest of Canada most brotherly. Of course, I would include the northern half of California.

I like "modified Cascadia" where the southern border is S.F. bay. I say that, even geographically it could be argued, that the Sutter Buttes are the southernmost projection of the Cascade fault, in line with Shasta and Lassen. Of course, they are defined now as a free standing mountain range, independant,.........but to get the border down here, I'd go with it.

Oh, there is plenty reason to tamper with Canada. We've got George Bush North running our country right now. He's a terrible Prime Minister. So much BS going on within our gov't over the past 7 years. And he's planning on running again in 2015, we don't have any rule in Canada about how many years someone can be Prime Minister. Canada doesn't have it's shit as together as most people think.

Here we discuss -- lightheartedly (mostly) -- the possibility of taking the opportunity during the current federal government "abdication" to create a new nation along Western North America to be called Cascadia, after the mountain range.

Which might not be a bad idea. There must be some real estate savvy folks here.... What might a similar acreage in a similarly desolate area cost?

Otherwise.... When I become Emperor of The Sovereign Nation of Cascadia, I will set aside a suitable location, call it the Burning Man National Park, and make the whole week a National Holiday.
