Many more new cases are expected. Sherwin last month told reporters that federal law enforcement had opened up more than 400 subject case files — a term that broadly refers to identifying people of interest — in connection with the investigation. A Justice Department spokesperson told BuzzFeed News this week that the number of subject files was up to approximately 540.

Sherwin also previously announced that the Justice Department had formed special task forces focused on building cases that involved more serious felony crimes, including assaulting law enforcement, conspiracy against the United States and sedition, and attacks on the media.

“150 years after the Department’s founding, battling extremist attacks on our democratic institutions remains central to its mission.”

“If confirmed,” he wrote, “I will supervise the prosecution of white supremacists and others who stormed the Capitol on January 6—a heinous attack that sought to disrupt a cornerstone of our democracy: the peaceful transfer of power to a newly elected government.”

Agreed, Simon. It sort of figures that the man who introduced the bill would be from Joplin, in the far southwestern part of the state. If you see the normal type of "dire emergencies" this state has had in the past 20 years, beginning with the flood of '93, you might begin to understand the tendency for the desire of self-help. Normally we as Missourians can do a shitload without this kind of thinking.

During the Flood of 1993, state employees who lived north of the Missouri River had to either find lodging in Jefferson City or make a 300 mile daily commute through Sedalia and then to Jefferson City. Cedar City, just north of Jefferson City, was almost wiped off the map. The Coast Guard buoy tender Cheyenne sent small boats out looking for survivors. The only way to access the State Capitol grounds was via High Street (aptly named) because lower streets were flooded. The Capital Plaza Hotel was flooded on its first floor and in its garage underneath.
Things were just as bad if not worse in low-lying parts of Kansas City and St.Louis.
But Missourians came though whenever and wherever they were needed, filling sandbags and supporting those folks placing the sandbags.

Bishop Desmond Tutu came to St. Louis during the flood. He wanted to see what was going on. He jumped out of his escort car, cane in hand and got in a line of folks passing sandbags, saying the words that would make him welcome anywhere, "I want to help". And he did. More than just the physical labor, he inspired others by his presence. Meanwhile, then-presidential candidate Ross Perot showed up in Huntsdale, Missouri. That clown never lifted one sandbag.

I honestly don't know what type of disaster the so-named "Missouri Minutemen" could respond to. We've had ice storms, tornadoes (the F5 in Joplin among others of lesser degree) and floods. Normally the state Highway Patrol, .Missouri DOT, and local emergency service workers have things well in hand, and at that point the Columbia detachment of the National Guard may join in if medical services are needed, or a military police unit to provide traffic control services. Beyond that, the local volunteer effort runs DEEP. How deep?

During the flood of 1993 the City of Canton, Missouri was threatened by the Mississippi River, also in flood stage. Students from the local college filled sandbags, aided by citizens. They weren't sure they had enough help. Near sunset, the Amish began to arrive, swelling the ranks of the volunteers. They were tireless, adding enough sandbags to the levee to hold against the forecast crest the following day. Women from the Amish settlements brought in freshly made breads and pastries as well as stew to feed all the hungry volunteers, including the National Guardsmen and MoDOT personnel on duty.

Frankly, Simon, I don't think this guys proposed bill stands any chance of passage. It may languish and die off in committee before it gets to the legislature floor.

Watched Missouri's Hawley CPAC video. Dude is very smart and a master populist propagandist. He had a more elite upbringing than most.

While dividing the big 5: Apple, Amazon, Microsoft, Google, and Facebook has about 60% in polling, he never mentioned Walmart who built its entire business on destroying local smaller businesses with Chinese imports. Somehow It seems unlikely the Trump Party base understands that Hawley wants to take away their Walmart.

He and Rubio are the most concerning future candidates who could win the presidency.

There will surely be more nonsense and outrage out of CPAC, but the headlines are saying "you can't unsee Roger Stone dancing at CPAC to a rap song about 'patriots' knocking on the Capitol building in front of a monster truck."

There is now a transcription of the rendition, she goes through SO MANY key changes (and is pitchy as fuck)! This is being laughed about (or mourned) by so many of my musician friends.

"Today’s biggest story about the previous administration, though, came from the Senate hearings about the January 6, 2021, attack, held before the committee of Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs and the committee on Rules and Administration. While there is still confusion about what happened when, it became clear that there were some serious lapses in the protection of the Capitol, and it appears those lapses originated with Trump appointees in the Pentagon.

Because the District of Columbia is not a state, its National Guard is under the control of the Defense Department, and it is overseen by Army Secretary Ryan McCarthy. The Commander of the D.C. National Guard, Major General William Walker, told the Senate that, in response to a request from D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser and the director of D.C. Homeland Security and Emergency Management Agency, Dr. Christopher Rodriguez, Walker requested approval for the mission from McCarthy on January 1.

McCarthy’s approval did not come until January 5, when the event was already upon them. And, in what Walker saw as an unusual move, McCarthy withheld approval for Walker to deploy the Quick Reaction Force, guardsmen equipped with helmets, shields, batons, and so on, to respond to civil disturbance, without the approval of the Secretary of Defense."

We should never forget that the more dangerous seditionists were not the Capitol rioters, but the rabble of elected representatives that were ushered away to safety during the riot and allowed back in to vote against confirming the election.

Last night, federal prosecutors filed a motion revealing that a leader of the paramilitary group the Oath Keepers claimed to be coordinating with the Proud Boys and another far-right group before the January 6 insurrection.

After former President Donald Trump tweeted that his supporters should travel to Washington, D.C., on January 6 for a rally that “will be wild!,” Kelly Meggs, a member of the Oath Keepers, wrote on Facebook: “He wants us to make it WILD that’s what he’s saying. He called us all to the Capitol and wants us to make it wild!!! Sir Yes Sir!!! Gentlemen we are heading to DC pack your s***!!”

In a series of messages, Meggs went on to make plans with another individual for an attack on the process of counting the electoral votes. On December 25, Meggs told his correspondent that “Trumps staying in, he’s Gonna use the emergency broadcast system on cell phones to broadcast to the American people. Then he will claim the insurrection act…. Then wait for the 6th when we are all in DC to insurrection.”

Love it, Simon. (I knew you had me partially targeted when you photoshopped Dwayne ("Rock") Johnson to be the stand-in for our V.P.) Let me provide the dialogue:

"FINALLY! The sensible majority has returned to Washington, D.C.

Let's see, now, who is the minority leader?"

**Mitch McConell approaches the dais**

Before McConell can speak,

"It DOESN'T MATTER WHAT YOUR NAME IS!

i AM SO SICK AND TIRED AS THE BLUE BLAZES OF YOUR LYING CHEATING ROOTY-POO CANDY ASS MESSING THINGS UP WITH YOUR OBSTRUCTIONISM AND UNWILLINGNESS TO COMPROMISE IN THIS ESTEEMED BODY. NOW, GO HOME AND RETIRE OR SIT DOWN AND SHUT THE HELL UP BEFORE I HAVE THE SARGEANT ARMS LAY THE SMACKETH DOWN ON YOUR CARCASS. COMPRENDE, CLOWN?

THIS IS THE PEOPLE'S CAPITOL BUILDING, AND I AM THE PEOPLE'S VEEP! NOW GO SIT DOWN BEFORE I HAVE TO JUMP OFF THE TOP OF THIS PLATFORM AND CRUSH YOU WITH A PEOPLE'S ELBOW!"

Democracy in action.
