HI Doc! HI GW!
the playa was as flat/smooth as I've ever seen it. Which is not to say it's level, but flat and smooth.

Hey, Ygmir, did you get out and walk any distance onto the playa? A periodically drying surface tends to produce mud cracks, and after a while, those mud cracked surfaces may fill up with sediment of silt or fine sand size. Also, in your opinion, was there anysurficial cementation by salt or gypsum? Either, both, or neither are possible.

The sedimentary deposition that occurs on the playa is similar to that which occurs on the sabkhas, or salt flats around the Persian Gulf and along the margins of the Dead Sea and Great Salt Lake.
You have dust storms on all, referred to by their Arabic name "haboob" according to the NOAA. In the case of the Black Rock Playa, I prefer the term 'Washoe Zephyr', which was first popularized by Mark Twain and is unique to Nevada.

Thanks for your observations.

Hi Rhino.
yes, surface cracking was as usual, pervasive. I noted no special surface depositions of gypsum or any particular salts. I walked around the area we camped near the western shoreline/Cassidy mine area. We also wandered the transition zone closer to 12 mile, searching for the grave we saw there a few years ago. There had been a rain a week or so before we got there. What stood out to me was the lack of any "pressure ridges" or sand snakes or any sort of small area uplifting/deposition. Some areas were a little moist, not enough to be slick or sticky, but enough to be soft.
To be fair, my exploration was limited to the western shoreline area, but noting the speed vehicles were traveling out deeper on the playa, and not raising much in the way of dust, my guess is it's about the same out there.
A plus was seeing a line of low orbit satellites crossing over us, on their mission to cover the world with an electronic net meant to serve humanity...or their masters.

Thank you a great deal, ygmir. You have added to my level of understanding of that phenomenon of hazard and benefit known to us all as 'mineral dust'. I consider it a hazard when it is the root cause of human fatality. In 2014 a multiple-fatality car pile-up in Arizona occurred because of a white-out dust storm. It's well known that airborne volcanic dust is a potential root cause for airplane crashes. The benefit side of the same dust coin? Dust is the primary component of loess, a soil created from airborne dust with the addition of water, organic matter, and developing over time. Loess soils here in the midwest US are one reason we have fantastic agricultural productivity of cereal grains. More than 200 bushels of corn per acre in Iowa can be grown on non-bottomland soils.

The playa opened my eyes to the potential research opportunities for geologists in learning about this poorly understood subject, and it's why I'm back in school at the tender young age of 61 seeking a doctorate. I only had a partial understanding of fine particle rocks through my study of tidal flat sequences. Now, my understanding of fine-grained sedimentary rocks is more complete.

What's next? Who knows?

News and views from the Midwest - and a request

Post by ^Rhino! » Wed Jun 16, 2021 7:15 am

Damn, I love and miss you people.

Here in Missouri on my little island if (in?)sanity things are ramping up. My sole frustration is a lack of a source for fresh alligator meat.
I've Just added Cajun to my list of practiced and proficient cooking styles. It must have come from one too many binge-watched episodes of "Swamp People". The signs were there a couple of years back at the Black Rock Beacon when I made andouille sausage jambalaya for the whole crew. There were no leftovers, and camp members from L.A. and New York City said it was the best they'd ever had. Laissez les bon temps rouler! I just bought a five-pound bag of Louisiana crawfish for etouffee later this week.

I'm considering a Florida trip this year to haul back an art car for the playa in 2022 - a "swamp buggy". Some of the low-end buggies can be had for under $10,000, and will haul 4-6 people, a couple of coolers, etc., but I'll need to be able to repurpose the thing postevent. Any experiences or ideas are actively sought right now from you folks so I don't waste my money or have to spend months in Florida hunting Burmese pythons to make up for the investment. I'd rather spend a few days hunting opals at the Royal Peacock Mine in Virgin Valley, NV.

I'm taking some graduate-level history courses at U. of Missouri in the fall, still seeking the PhD in geology but trying to overcome my out-of-department course requirements (I need 12 semester hours from outside my Department).

The city-mandated mask requirement is done with, as Columbia has more than 60% vaccination for COVID. I actually ate out for the first time in more than a year last week. I can cook really well, so it never made my life difficult. But now I understand what Mom used to tell me when she said, "sometimes it's nice to not HAVE to cook." I miss you, Mom.

I'm still self-educating with loads of books and great podcasts. You're NEVER too old to learn.

I'll close this with a reminder to you. Don't be a pessimist or an optimist. The glass is not half-full OR half empty. be a realist and realize that in modern times, THE GLASS IS REFILLABLE!

I started watching the Mandalorian yesterday. Within 5 minutes it struck me what it reminded me of. Fist Full of Dollars. Even Mandos delivery sounded like Clint!!!

FIGJAM:

you're great. You reminded me that the more things change, the more they may remain the same. "Fistful of Dollars" indeed may seem like "The Mandalorian" ------------FOR A FEW DOLLARS MORE.

Please forgive me, it just struck me as funny.
