Watch the BM website - around january for deadlines and submission information. You can also read at their site about the process.

What type of grant are you thinking of, exactly? I've never heard of a BM art grant going to a book or photography project, and it doesn't sound like something BRAF would do either but I could be wrong about that.

Do you mean some other type of public or private grant?

I'm with Dork, I don't think you're going to get anything like that from within the Burning Man infrastructure.
So you're asking about grants in general, and that's a pretty wide-open topic. My friends who have gone through art school often tell me that writing grant applications is a science unto itself, as they come in all shapes and forms.
Perhaps this would be a good thread though, to assemble comprehensive input...

Photography book art grants

Post by burnedangle » Sun Aug 19, 2007 8:09 pm

I am planning a book on Children with Autism sort of a humanitarian project.I hope the proceeds from the book can go into research. I have good friend with a child who is low functioning, and I also drive children with Autism to School .I wonder each day what will happen to all these children (Autism is at epidemic proportions)in the future they are different ,but have a lot of gifts. I am different as well and feel that with my gift of photography maybe I can be of some help but I have no idea what kind of grant to look for or how to get started. Basically I have a camera, an idea, and a heart

Must... resist... temptation... to... debate... topic... of... autism... epidemic...

You already have access to some subjects and a camera, so I'd say start what parts of the project you can do for free, then start pitching the idea to autism organizations. Autism Speaks has been raising a buttload of money and spending most of it on self-promotion, your book could fit in with their scheme.

Basically I have a camera, an idea, and a heart
...and hopefully a proposal.

Grants pretty much always start with a proposal. To be honest the idea of a photography project probably won't fly unless the project itself is something that could be incorporated into a piece on the playa. Not an exhibition but an installed piece something like Michael Light's 100 Suns

http://www.michaellight.net/100suns/index.html

which was placed on the playa some years back. However, neither I nor anyone else here is the final arbiter for such things but if you expect to be taken seriously and considered for grants of any kind you really need to articulate your idea beyond just saying you have an idea.

Try doing Googling a few terms and see what you come up with under 'grants', 'burningman,' etc.

So you want to do charity work, but you need a grant to do it. You'd fit right in at Burning Man.
