I love the sound of generators.......

Post by DVD Burner » Thu Jan 10, 2008 11:21 am

Seriously. I love the sound of anything that has a continuous buzz to it.

The sound of washing machines, a shower, rain, a loud fan, air compressors..........dildos on my head............it goes on and on.

It puts me into a trance and sometimes to sleep.

Is there anyone else that is this way?

At BM , yes.
Anywhere else, um, not so much.

Even at concerts I stay next to the generators. It adds to the dreamy effect for me.

Agreed. I've found it easier to go to sleep since I started using the oscillating floor heater in my bedroom this winter. As a result of this observation, I got a white noise machine for Xmas so I can sleep better when spring hits and the heater goes off. Got it for 20 bucks or so on sale, so it's not that expensive.
Okay, so ten out of ten for style, but minus several million for good thinking, yeah?

I do need a radio or preferably a TV in the background when I am at home falling asleep
Silence makes me think too much, keeps me up.

Unless I'm totally exhausted I can't sleep without a white noise generator. I prefer having a fan going as the CPAP machine is too quiet.

I can't sleep without some backround noises.. I always thought it was from growing up in Philadelphia and learning to sleep through el trains, gunfire, and sirens. Did anyone that needs some backround noise grow up somewhere quiet?

I dig all the noise at BM, there was not enough though. It was wayy too quiet at times.

My problem was the oposite. The Sounds of the burn where like an amplification of what I hear everyday. It was like turning up the volume on my brain up to 11.

As a musician in a rock and roll band, you will no doubt have this soon:

Tinnitus (pronounced /tɪˈnaɪtəs/ or /ˈtɪnɪtəs/,[1] from the Latin word for "ringing"[2]) is the perception of sound in the human ear in the absence of corresponding external sound(s).

Tinnitus can be perceived in one or both ears or in the head. It is usually described as a ringing noise, but in some patients it takes the form of a high pitched whining, buzzing, hissing, humming, or whistling sound, or as ticking, clicking, roaring, "crickets" or "tree frogs" or "locusts", tunes, songs, or beeping.[3] It has also been described as a "whooshing" sound, as of wind or waves.[4]

Tinnitus is not itself a disease but a symptom resulting from a range of underlying causes, including ear infections, foreign objects or wax in the ear, and injury from loud noises. Tinnitus is also a side-effect of some oral medications, such as aspirin, and may also result from an abnormally low level of serotonin activity.

Sleep next to a generator??? I would be a zombie and would just lay there until i lost my mind from never sleeping. If I could sleep in a cave that was absolutely silent and dark I would be in heaven.

That does sound nice. Sleep till your body was refreshed. Mmmmmmm.

EDIT---Sleep till my mind refreshes. If my brain is functioning my body follows.

I sometimes start my generator out on the patio when I go to bed. Ok, not really but I know exactly what you mean. You could get a white noise generator but why not just run a fan? That's what I do. I cannot sleep in a silent room, any little noise will wake me (I sleep very light) if I don't have a fan or something with a constant hum to it. Mine comes from growing up with a ceiling fan in my room my whole life and I became accustomed to having the noise it makes. It's stuck with me even today.

On the other hand, I cannot sleep when there is music playing (well, I can but not a good sleep; more like a cat nap) that has heavy bass. I remember when I lived on a farm in California and my "apartment" was a duplex. The people who lived in the adjoining apartment would start playing mariachi music at like 5:30am every day. It was brutal for someone who worked nights. At BM though, I don't really notice the thumping music. It kind of just becomes part of the background noise to me. Go figure.

I once had an spiritual out of body experience while camp next to a babbling brook in Harriman SP in new york. I only done that a few time and without any drugs. crashing waves also work for me, but I have a phobia about killer waves

I'm almost like that, but more selective. I like the sound of nice diesel generators or Hondas or maybe an Onan, but I hate the noise of the 3600-rpm lawnmower-engine ones.
Washing machines are cool, if the load of clothes is well balanced (so the spin cycle is smooth.)
It's hard to go wrong with showers and rain, or fans, but small air compressors are irritating... yet I like big, two stage ones.
I have a boat, a real, "water" boat. It has a 454 Mercruiser with through-the-transom exhaust. I LOVE the sound of it idling in the water!

I held off on getting one as I've seen enough doctors to last a lifetime. But my girlfriend pushed me into doing the sleep study and getting the machine. Now I wonder why I waited so damn long to do it.

It's been a life changer and one of the best damn things I've ever done.
Anyway back on topic...

Oh, by the way DVD - I'll have you know, I'll have FOUR generators at BM this year, up from last year's three. Maybe THAT will bring your mysterious absentee ass to the playa!
A 1k Honda playing treble, two 2K Hondas filling in the midrange, and a 4k Onan for some bass. Maybe I should go outside and fire up all four and make you a recording! You could put on your headphones and sleep well! I could even catch some exhaust in a coffee can and FedEx it to you for added realism even beyond 7.1 surround...

BTW, speaking of Onan generators would anyone know of any good sources for Onan generator parts, in particular circuit boards like the 300C859 that don't cost a king's ransom to get?

Do I have to repeat this again?

I was at the few first burns when Larry and Michael and the lot started it.

I was there with Flash, Ms. P., Harley, Crimson, Will Rogers......Pepe.......Anat.......

Last I was there was more than a few years ago. And I could not stay.

That wont happen again.
