Certainly you are not question the right to display the swastika? You know that the swastika has been a symbol of peace for much longer than it has been a symbol of hatred?

Uh, yeah. The American National Socialist Workers Party took credit for the swastikas popping up and the Nazi racist propaganda being littered all over. I'm sure they were doing it as a symbol of peace.

When the SS tortured my grandfather in France, and when they machine-gunned the old man that tried to help him, and then machine-gunned a bunch of naked men, women and children in a ditch in Braunau, Austria, and then turned guard dogs loose on anything left alive, the armband the SS wore a symbol of peace too, I'm sure.

I -AM- questioning the right to MOOP up the fucking river, the air and the streets with their litter and the fact that people defend it.

It's interesting to note that he fought for the right for these suburban brats to fly the flag of his enemy and declare that the concentration camp mass murders he witnessed were all a hoax. He suffered his entire life and then died from what the Nazis did to him. His wife lost her first husband to the Nazis. That right he won for them is the exact reason I'm not hunting them with a 30.06 right now.

Zaphod, I am not trying to attack you nor your opinions here. I am simply stating that they have every right to use the swastika in any manner they wish. You can disagree with the message all you want but you have to respect their right to do it. I completely agree with you about the littering/environment impact such an act causes.

In regards to evil men using this symbol... More people have been murdered in the name of the cross than any other symbol on earth yet I don't hear you saying that people should not display the cross. Simply because some evil men have used a peaceful symbol does not evil the symbol make.

The swastica is an ancient symbol, both in the clockwise and anti-clockwise form. It's common in Amerind petroglyphs.
The genocide brought about by the Austrian tyrant and his followers is just one more in a long list of genocides. It's more relavent to the west than the 2.6 million killed by Idi Amin,,, who recently died peacefully in his bed.
Srebians, Hutsus, Tutsis, Palestinians, Armenians, etc, etc. There's enough genocide to go around for everybody. So we kill a couple million Iraquis and Afghanis,,,,, who's counting?
If you want to get all worked up over the eastern european genocide,,, so be it. More were killed in Russia. If not numbers, then percentage. My Irish forefathers lost a big percentage of the population to famine when it was coused by nothing more than "clerical" problems from the British.
The swastica is meaningless. It's only the beliefs of those who rally behind the symbol that count.
As long as people find reasons to hate, the symbols are only ancillary.
I don't post things because I believe that they are the absolute truth. I post them because I believe that they should be considered.

We agree on the littering, but I disagree with the "any manner" because that only works to the point where they do it to invoke fear or terror in others.

Your reference to the Christian cross is thought-provoking and appreciated, but, despite the US Constitution you still don't want to be caught burning crosses in public without expecting repercussions. And, if somebody put the cross on my property or littered with it, I'd expect the same justice upon them as that upon the Nazis. Except, Christianity didn't declare war on the United States, torpedoing merchant ships, requiring a draft and causing millions of Americans to give up their lives and go fight.

As to the fact that the swastika was a symbol of peace, that's like saying the Confederate battle flag is a symbol of state's rights and the fighting spirit of the southern peasants who fought, as Shelby Foote said, because the yankees were invading their homes. Technically, you're correct. (There's an old bakery downtown with a swastika on it, and some pre-war homes with them. Sometimes people complain, but no generally.) If you tell it to somebody who was a victim of Klan terrorism, though, you're in for a tough debate however civil.

In both cases it's not the symbol, it's the intent of its display. If you're doing it to terrorize or coerce others, you're going to run into trouble eventually.

In light of this year's theme, this is a great discussion. Have an amazing weekend, everybody!

"Christianity didn't declare war on the United States" The Sioux nation might disagree with you. The Aztecs weren't too fond of the padres either. It's hard to continually take "point of view" into consideration, but, it's necessary if you want to be completely objective.

Hitler patterned a book after the BIA? Wow.

I think you mean that the "Final Solution" was patterned after our Indian Policy. The british policy towards natives in South Africa--that very same that Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was knighted for advocating--was inspirational as well. Anyone who has the power can get into genocide. The bible is full of it. It's probably a remote ancestor as well.

The Sioux nation was no stranger to war themselves, and kicked ass fighting FOR America as well. It's official. As for the Aztecs, you're not going to try to tell me that the United States fought a war with the Aztecs are you?

Please don't confuse "American" with "Christian." A whole lot of Muslims, Hindus and Jews, Mormons, atheists and agnostics, not to mention native American war heroes might disagree with you. In fact, George Dubya f'in Bush just awarded a posthumous Medal of Honor to a Sioux with an apology that America should have given it to him (Even a clock is right twice a day, I suppose.) while he was alive. Dude's name was Woodrow Wilson Keeble. They must hate America to name their kid that.

Zaph, I can't argue with anything you say. The Amerinds fought endless wars with other tribes. We fucked them good with alcohol and smallpox though. They still fought for the US. I have a neighbor who was born on the rez and later fought his way all across the pacific in armor. The Navajo code-talkers were another good example.
Ive read endlessly about the westward expansion and the march of the conquistadores. It's absolutely fascinating.
A big part of the indian population in Chile resisted and held out against the Spanish for 4 centuries. Now that has to be some kind of record.
The Aztecs lost out to cholera. That screwed them good. What cholera and the conquistadores didn't trash, the Jesuits destroyed completely.
They were famous for eliciting conversions at the point of the sword.
In general, the missions were built around the local water hole. If you wanted to drink, you had to suck up the the padres.
The road to empire is built of bones and consecrated by religion.
I don't post things because I believe that they are the absolute truth. I post them because I believe that they should be considered.

I thought that it was smallpox that doomed the Aztecs. I don't think cholera even hit Europe until the early 1800s.

Ah, well, they probably deserved it. If they had a Marine Corps of their own to defend them, they wouldn't have been vulnerable. Survival of the Fittest/Natural Selection/Thinning the Herd/God Loves the Marines Because He Keeps Heaven Stocked With Fresh Souls, etc Yadda Yadda Yawn. It's Good to Be the King.

And just think: Everybody Custer killed didn't suffer from smallpox or cholera. But if it makes you feel better, my ancestors tried to kill him quite a few years before those pacifist tribals mustered their legendary pacifism skills and peaced him to death.

That's like, what, fifth grade? What is this, the Webelos? Is the den mother hot? 'Cause, that would be okay. I once saw a den mother stick the claw of a hammer into her eyebrow trying to teach kids how to build a birdhouse. She wasn't exactly hot, but, that was okay anyway.

Then were were going to build a giant bonfire, but the fire marshall showed up and said "No, you can't build that fire. It's too big." ('What we got here is some fine Oregon hardwood. But it ain't too goddamn boucoup!') and so everybody had to do this hokey indian dance they'd been rehearsing all week around the equivalent of a Weber barbecue.

Definately need to keep the Webelos off the playa.
