You must mean "Cash for Clunkers"!

No complaints here. I was able to unload a 1992 Ford Aerostar with 350,000 miles on it and got $4500 toward a new truck. That foolish van drove like the day I got it and I would have run it for many more years until it died on me. It probably had a value of $300.

I hope the better gas milage I get now was worth the government paying that much to get me out of my perfectly good vehicle and into a new one. I did have a little guilt leaving such a reliable vehicle at the dealership to have the engine destroyed and then crushed.

And then shipped to China for the steel to be recycled and then shipped back to the U.S. :?
Best wishes on your new truck. I would'nt take part in a goverment program like that in which us tax payers foot the bill for. From what I saw on the news some of the vehicles that were traded in appeared to be in good condition such as a 1999 Jeep Cheerokee.
I still have my 95 Ford 1/2 ton that has almost 116,000 miles on it. With the exception of the ball joints, tie rod and drag link, serpentine belt, battery, main drive shaft U-joints, tires and brakes, everythings original. Even the clutch is original. I'm gonna cry when I trade it in.

yup, me too.....

93 dodge diesel one ton 4x4......170K 15mpg
86 Mercedes 300 SDL........230K 28 mpg
78 Mercedes 240D (4spd)......310K. 25 mpg

other old stuff, too.......

I wonder how long it takes in better fuel economy to undo the energy used to produce a new vehicle, recycle it, etc......and, it uses fuel at the same time......

just sayin......a new prius over an old diesel Mercedes, may not actually save anything........

but, I bet someone, somewhere, paid healthy bribes to the the "cash for clunkers" program instituted.......

My '86 GMC crew-cab dually 4x4 gets horrible gas mileage. But it's paid for, and can haul an ungody shitload of weight.
A new similar truck would cost minimum $40,000. It would take a hell of a long time for me to save any money buying a new one!
And also what Ygmir said... my truck already exists. That fact offsets a lot of pollution created in the process of manufacturing a new one.
I only drive it when I need it to carry or pull something or get through snow.
There's a lot to be said for keeping the vehicles you already have.

I'm not knocking anybody who gets a new vehicle, I just won't take part in a "cash for clunker or appliance" whatever program.

And I do wish Shambala the best with his new truck. I admire him in getting one.

Thank you catman! No matter who got these clunkers traded in, the government decided in their infinate wisdom that this was the way to get old cars off the road, improve overall gas milage and stimulate the economy. 700,000-750,000 cars were going to be sold before the funds ran out and the program ended.

There were so many people I know who drive real crap cans and wanted to take part in the program, but the milage on their cars were a little too high and they lost out. I think it was a program that offered too much money per vehicle to too few taxpayers.

Supposedly it did stimulate the economy enough so the Big Three are rehiring laid off workers and adding second and third shifts :D

Thats why I personally would'nt take advantage of it

Well, at least a few hundred folks are back to work. For now

My wifes 05 Jeep with 75,000 miles qualified and I'd hardley call it clunker
